(2003-05-30) — A landmark deal between AOL and Microsoft means that users of the AOL browser on a Windows platform will now hear “You Got Hacked” when an unauthorized user takes control of their computer.
“It used to take days or weeks before you knew that someone else was controlling your PC,” said Microsoft founder Bill Gates. “Now, you’ll hear a pleasant voice alerting you to the fact that someone has entered your system through one of our many convenient security vulnerabilities.”
The new alert system won’t prevent hackers from accessing the Windows system, Mr. Gates said, since Microsoft has “no clue” how to do that.

AOL, Microsoft Make Nice
The browser war has been over for so long that it’s hard to get exercised over yesterday’s settlement between Microsoft and AOL (which consumed Netscape years ago). I find it ironic that the deal gives AOL/Netscape a seven-year royalty-free license…
