(2003-04-27) — Several syndicates of wealthy neo-conservatives are pumping money into private efforts to launch armed space vehicles which could mount an attack on Mars by 2007.
The self-described SpaceHawks say they can’t wait for a government bureaucracy like NASA to develop American military power in the solar system.
Mars made the top of the list because of recent reports that it might contain some of the pre-cursors to life. The plans call for privately-funded civilian interplanetary militias to occupy Mars and prevent it from exporting its brand of potential life to nearby planets.
One unnamed spokesman for a conservative venture capital firm asked rhetorically, “Do you really think we should sit back and wait until Mars develops cellular life before we hit them?”
