Obama Calls Elitist Charge 'Gauche' and 'Droll'

by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace · 49 Comments · · Print This Story Print This Story

(2008-04-24) — Responding to remarks by presidential candidate John McCain suggesting he’s an ‘elitist‘, Sen. Barack Obama today called the accusation 'gauche' and 'droll'.

“First of all, it’s très gauche and a bit bourgeois to banter about elitism at all,” said Sen. Obama, “It simply isn’t done in polite society — not among my chums from Harvard Law School or Columbia University, and certainly not in the Senate cloak room or the finer salons.”

Speaking to reporters from behind the iron gate of his nearly $2 million mansion in the historic Kenwood neighborhood of Chicago, the twice-published author noted, “It’s quite droll that my wealthy senate colleague has the gall to besmirch my reputation by suggesting I can’t relate to the hoi polloi. Me? An elitist? Why, if I weren’t such a good sport, I’d challenge Sen. McCain to a duel with rapiers.”

I must be really dim. I’d prefer a President that was just a tad “above it all” a “person of honor”. That may well leave my drinking buddies out of this but the leader of the free world should be just a smidge above “average”.
Trying to make one feel foolish for these traits don’t speak well of the accuser IMHO

I just cannot fathom how John McCain could think that Obama is an elitist.

It should be obvious beyond all doubt that Barack Obama is a standard issue, plain-vanilla egomaniac - and of all people, McCain should be able to figure that one out !

After all, Senator - it takes one to know one …

Who says our elected officials aren’t out there fighting for the common good…?

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Reuters) - Senate lawmakers in Florida have voted to ban the fake bull testicles that dangle from the trailer hitches of many trucks and cars throughout the state.

pamphlet superb…a distinct cut above your average pamphlet…one might say it’s an “elitist” pamphlet

  • 7 Just Ranting // Apr 24, 2008 at 3:39 pm

    bober,

BO has abandoned his common man roots as surely as Jeremiah Wright has done. Both preach the racism of low expectations to their communities in an effort to enslave people into dependence on the federal government. That mentality is, in large part, what destroyed New Orleans in Katrina’s wake, and so many other inner city communities who never suffered a natural catastrophe. If he had an ounce of integrity he’d show poor people how to follow in his footsteps; to value education, to develop a strong work ethic, to support each other in their communities, keep away from drugs, and to stop giving into the self defeating trap of blaming others should they fail.

BO is a success story. He owes his success to the family and community from which he arose. If he were a true leader he’d stop hanging out with race baiting pols and “religious leaders”, and start speaking the truth to the inner city power brokers. Maybe a few discussions with the likes of Bill Cosby would put him in the right direction.

wv: unlucky country…We will be if he gets elected.

JR, agreed for the most part. I don’t want any of the 3 “choices” running things.
It’s just the “elite” thing being tossed around as though it equates with serial killer or the like that bugs me. I’m sorry but “elite” makes one more presidential, not less.

overwhelm they…very poor grammer indeed but we get the idea

I may be hallucinating, but in the recent past I do believe I saw Elitism morph into a highly-esteemed character trait.

Or, maybe, it is I—morphed—into a character in 1984 or A Clockwork Orange.
Or, maybe, I’ve inadvertently stumbled into a parallel universe.

So, does being an elitist make one above average? smarter? better? in touch? qualified?
BO is the last person we need in the Oval Office, sHillary is a close second. I do hope there are enough American voters out there with enough sense to keep us safe and secure.

  • 14 JamesonLewis3rd // Apr 24, 2008 at 5:13 pm

The loudest applause of the day, however, wasn’t for McCain.

It came when local State Sen. Brandon Smith rose to complain to McCain about Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s recent statement that some people “cling” to guns or faith in their bitterness. McCain asked Smith what he thought of Obama’s remarks.

“I think it represents the view of someone who doesn’t understand this neck of the woods,” Smith said. The room exploded in prolonged whoops, cheers and clapping.

McCain added, to more applause, that “those were elitist remarks, to say the least.”

Will China and India be taking that over? Maybe we can get out in under 100 years…maybe”
    bober!
that’s a stretch, but I give ya points for bringing Iraq in to it. They mentioned Brazil, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Kazakistan, sea based oil platforms, and even war torn Canada. I didnt see anything about Iraq.
My point being the world seems to have a generous supply of crude. So why are gas prices still going up?
    wv:yearly Weiser, how poignant today.

  • 16 JamesonLewis3rd // Apr 24, 2008 at 6:16 pm

My understanding is that the underlying mechanism propelling the spiraling crude oil prices is a meld of several mitigating factors and that the available supply itself really doesn’t figure all that prominently into the equation.

Obama’s a liberal elitist, and and an effete elitist, at that. Part of the “new castrati” as Rush likes to refer to such leftist “men.” My current favorite Obama moment is the one from a couple of days ago where he barked at a reporter for asking him a question while he was trying to eat his “waffle.” How dare that reporter spoil the superiority of an Obama photo op with a silly question? Shouldn’t we all know how important Obama is? Just the thought of Obama should make us all feel faint from our own inferiority.

BTW, Barry must be losin’ his touch. Notice how the “fainting” at his rallies has stopped. What a phony!

Hey ,maybe if we ask very nicely,Queen Elizabeth would consent to be The Queen of The United States .Would that be elitist enough for bobbity?
Just what we need ,elitists who are “Born to it .” Elitists who have done nothing to earn Elitism.Elitists who simply think they are better than the rest of us.
Getting a Royal Family again will just save us so much agonizing about who is going to rule this Country, all this messy voting and such.
Of course the American”Elite”,the Kennedys ,the Clintons, the Kerrys, the Rockefellers, Obama. But ,but wait .None of them has ever done anything to earn a dime. All their riches are inherited or swilled down from the public trough. They are not smarter ,they just know how to play the game ,Bribery and Blackmail.

It’s scary to think that many voters are forming their opinions and making their selections based upon a speech that was written by someone else and rehearsed before handlers. The candidate may be so bad that his worst fear is that voters will see the real person.

Where did anyone get the idea that today is my birthday? That day of infamy occurs in late January (Bingo, RP!), when no one is in the mood to celebrate because the post-Christmas bills are stacking up and the snowy-icy-frigid weather cancels the best-laid plans. I’m aging quickly enough as it is.

What do you get when you have a left-wing kook pretending to be a journalist interviewing a black nationalist kook? You get Bill Moyers interviewing “Reverend” Jeremiah “was a bullfrog” Wright. Either we’ll fall asleep listening to the lovefest or we’ll lose count of how many softballs will be tossed Wright’s way by the sycophant Moyers.

And what is my response now when I hear messiah Obama’s name …? Buwahahahahaha! What a sad joke that’s being played on America by the loons on the left side of the aisle.

  • 47 Krusty // Apr 26, 2008 at 9:31 am

If I may offer try to clarify — there is a difference between being ‘elite’ and being ‘elitist.’

Obama is elite. Top notch education. Wealthy (self-made). Etc. You’d expect a president to have some of that.

Obama’s comments show he is also an elitist, meaning that he thinks he knows people better than they know themselves. If only they were wise enough to elect him, they would then have good jobs and not have to settle for voting for Republicans based on the other things they “cling” to, like guns and religion and antipathy toward people who aren’t like them, etc.
