Liberia’s Taylor Quits to Play Minor League Baseball
(2003-07-26) — Liberian President Charles Taylor announced again today that he would retire from office, this time to play minor league baseball somewhere in the southern United States.
This marks the 27th retirement announcement this month for the embattled African leader.
“I’ve gone as far as a man can go in this line of work,” Mr. Taylor said. “I’ve led my people through years of turmoil and terror, and have lured the world’s only superpower into positioning troops off our coast. For a despot, it doesn’t get any better than this. I’m leaving at the top of my game.”
Mr. Taylor didn’t give a timeline for his departure, but indicated he should be ready to leave right after the Detroit Tigers win the World Series.
