(2003-07-15) — Today Rep. Dick Gephardt, D-MO, and Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-CT, each claimed official status as “the underdog” for the 2004 Democrat Presidential nomination. Both candidates hope to inherit the mantle once worn by Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, now the nominal frontrunner.
“Clearly, my campaign is in a pathetic condition,” said Sen. Lieberman, whose chief fundraiser resigned over the weekend. “In Washington D.C., if you lack money, you are officially an underdog…that’s me. I’m the ultimate outside-the-beltway underdog guy.”
However, Rep. Gephardt contended that his own cash-strapped White House bid had “all the makings of a comeback kid story.”
“If Al Sharpton weren’t already in this race, they’d be calling me the Al Sharpton of the 2004 campaign,” said the Missourian. “I don’t stand a chance of getting the nomination. Which is why cash should start pouring in. I can just hear those grassroots growing.”
