(2003-07-14) — France has lodged a complaint in the United Nations against international news organizations that have failed to acknowledge that the now-famous uranium from Niger is actually mined by a French company.
“Niger’s uranium mines are French-owned and under the control of the French Atomic Energy Commission,” said Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin (who is a man). “We’re proud of our French products. You know it’s not just wine and cheese anymore.”
The French complaint asks the U.N. to require global journalists to refer to uranium from Niger as “French uranium.”
“Of course, we don’t know anything about the alleged attempts by Saddam Hussein to buy uranium from the French mining firm,” said Mr. de Villepin. “We also don’t know which western European nation provided intelligence about the alleged deal to the British, nor why that country refuses to let the Brits release the details of the intelligence report to the Americans.”
