(2003-06-02) — New York Times “Executive Editor” Howell Raines has sent a “confidential” memo to Times reporters and editors urging his staff to “purge” so-called “bias” from “news” stories.
The paper has been “rocked” by so-called “scandal” in recent weeks and allegations that news stories allegedly reflect so-called “liberal” ideology.
Mr. Raines said the “bias” is often as subtle as using the phrase “so called” or placing quotation marks around certain words or phrases.
The “secret memo” states that liberal leanings of Times staffers are often revealed by who is quoted, and how high in the story a quote appears.
“I want everyone to understand how ’serious’ I am about purging all ‘political bias’ from our coverage,” Mr. Raines wrote. “We are not going to ‘push’ a so-called ‘liberal agenda’ in the news pages of the Times.”
