(2003-05-01) — U.S. Senator John Kerry, D-MA, admitted today that his first speech as a Senator in 1985 was not, as he frequently claimed, a defense of Roe v. Wade, but rather an attack on President Ronald Reagan’s plan to build 21 MX missiles.
“I’m ashamed to say, that although I am a Vietnam veteran, I sometimes make mistakes,” said Sen. Kerry. “My first speech was aimed at protecting the lives of our enemies by halting MX missile production. It was only later that I made the speech defending the right of American women to end the lives of their own little boys and girls.”
The Senator (who is a Vietnam veteran) promised to have his staff remove the statement from his presidential campaign web site, and to give back every vote he ever won by portraying himself as “the most zealous defender of abortion who ever strode the hallways of the U.S. Capitol.”
