(2003-04-11) — The Political Security Organization (PSO) of Yemen released a statement today explaining how 10 top suspects in the U.S.S. Cole bombing escaped from a Yemeni prison yesterday.
“There was a new guard on duty,” according to the PSO statement. “The suspects told the guard that they were being held for raping and beating women. In an effort to remedy the apparent injustice, the guard released them. The guard will not be censured, since he did the right thing based on what he knew about the men.”
The government statement went on to assure Yemenis that “no women escaped the prison. Many of the women in that prison have been convicted of appearing in public without a male escort. The Yemeni public is still safe from these immoral swine.”
Since female convicts who have served their sentences cannot be released from jail without a male escort, the PSO said, “even a rookie guard would not accidentally let a woman go free.”
