Obama: Coakley Victorious if Brown Gets Less Than 60%

by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace · 104 Comments · · Print This Story Print This Story

As voters in Massachusetts go to the polls today to decide who will complete the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy’s unexpired term, President Obama declared that “anything less than a 20-point win by Scott Brown represents a resounding endorsement of my entire domestic and foreign policy agenda.”

“If Brown ends up with less than 60 percent, there’s gonna be a lot of sullen Republicans, moping around, hanging their heads,” said the president to a crowd of supporters that greeted him upon his return from stumping for Democrat Martha Coakley. “Such a thin margin against such a historically weak opponent would be tantamount to a crushing loss for Scott, and would signal a clear rejection of the GOP platform in general.

Well done, Scott (Ott). You have mastered the Dem's verbal gymnastics of :"framing the debate," otherwise known as spin.

    With Apologies to Ernest Thayer

The outlook isn't good, for Martha Coakley today,
(The score is 0 to 2 when Obama joins a fray).
See, Virgina had gone against him, Jersey did so too,
Obama didn't seem to care; "Let me stump for you."

When Christie won New Jersey, pundits said, "Strike one."
And if Virginia follows suit, they'll be on a run.
McDonnell pulled way ahead, and as the ballots flew,
A different party won again, pundits said, "Strike two."

Lessons learned? "Shoot straight! Be like Annie Oakley!"
We don't want Obamacare; nor you, Martha Coakley!
Conservatives have returned, and Liberals moan and pout,
There is no joy in Beantown, the Dems again, struck out.

  • 16 RAM1 // Jan 19, 2010 at 8:07 pm

Chile, I wouldn't want to get into a truck OR car with Kennedy's offspring either especially when they are on the way to a late night trip to Congress, (or so he said at the time), or you may find a concrete barrier in your "grill".

BTW, the "offspring" I speak of doesn't even know the correct first name of Coakley, even though he SAYS her endorses her and knows her well!

Maybe he was in the same condition when he made this statement as he was when he rammed the concrete barrier? Marcia, Marcia, Marcia! lol http://hubpolitics.com/2010/01/18/patrick-kennedy...

Sunday I predicted a 20 point win by Brown. I don't know much about nothin' I'm just a milkman in Wyoming. But I do know that through the Tea parties, marches, and with phone calls we have made known our opinions particularly when it comes to this health scare idea. And what has the response from Obama/Reid/Pelosi been? They have looked out at we the people and flipped us off! That's why Scott Brown is going to take Massachusetts today. The people of this country will be heard! That is why the fears of conservative talk show hosts were unfounded, the people were not about to sit at home thinking this is "in the bag" for us. No! we want to make our voices heard, and we will. The next step should be another march on the Capitol, or in towns all across the land as soon as they try to spin this message and take up health scare again. We cannot afford to let them forget what we are saying by electing a Republican Senator out of Massachusetts.

Does anyone here take the slightest pause when the news says that because Brown got elected the insurance company stocks went way up? My heart is not wormed by the prospect of the insurance companies making more money because of this.

Granted, the health plan as it stands now (started strong/became laughable along the way) is not much good but, if the insurance companies are rejoicing over it's possible defeat then…maybe it wasn't so bad. I don't know how you folks fair with your insurer but mine has traditionally ducked every bill it could until cornered…and cornering them is a waste of my time, not what i pay for

As for the stock in insurance companies going up? Great, I've invested in 2. I figure it's the only way I can get any real return from all the premimums paid through the years. Over the last 10 years my investment has paid for itself. I don't want the government taking care of my family and me. At retirement I'll use Social Security for gas money. Boberin, this is still a capitalist society and maybe you should take advantage of all it offers, it's not too late.

  • 52 Upnorthlurkin // Jan 20, 2010 at 7:10 pm

Well…being the internets genius that I am, I likely used the wrong terminology in my complaint…. What I meant to say was when I hit refresh, I often have to log in again. Yesterday, a refresh put me all the way back to Wordpress where I couldn't even remember my password… I'm old, I admit it….but this is close to getting too hard for me…. These new-fangled inventions are really taxing my pea-brain!!

  • 53 boberin // Jan 20, 2010 at 7:15 pm

I'm way too invested and have learned that the best way to turn $50,000 into $25,000 is in the market…as has almost every other human in this country that bought into the "401K" myth and what my folks called "retirement"…seems such a charming concept, I'm sorry I'll miss it.
And, at the rate insurance companies already collect from me/my company it isn't "insurance", it's pre-paid healthcare.
And, if the care providers would accept from me what the "insurance" people pay…I wouldn't need "insurance" I could easily pay them and have money left over…
And the Dems started to work on that but got sidetracked…badly sidetracked so that I am NOT in favor of what they have now.
A "public option" on the other hand would have been sweet. It would only have served to keep "insurance" companies in line. If that could happen we'd all be able to retire…

  • 54 boberin // Jan 20, 2010 at 7:32 pm

  • 56 boberin // Jan 20, 2010 at 7:55 pm

  • 58 Upnorthlurkin // Jan 20, 2010 at 8:19 pm

Maybe you should think about firing your financial advisor….we've made back most if not all of our losses…but, knowing the market, we knew it would "come back." "Cut and Run" doesn't work in the market either.

  • 59 JCougMelancholy // Jan 20, 2010 at 8:46 pm

    Hyuk!

  • 60 RAM1 // Jan 20, 2010 at 8:58 pm

OR, even to "corner them" to give life saving treatments?

Obama's reaction to the voters, (or "WE THE PEOPLE's) angry voice in MASS should tell you the answer to my question!

  • 61 boberin // Jan 20, 2010 at 9:05 pm

RAM, all I really wanted/we ever needed was the dreaded "public option" to keep the for profit insurance company honest. Few if any would have chosen or had to use it. The gobbledygook they have now is ludicous at best, dangerous at worst. Why so many chose to ignore what the public option would have actually been is beyond me…it's beyond those that obfuscated the matter too

  • 62 Upnorthlurkin // Jan 20, 2010 at 9:15 pm

Bob, bob, bob. The public option isn't competition!! The government doesn't have to make a profit like any normal business! True reform will keep the insurance companies honest. Let them sell across state lines. Let them compete for Pete's sake!!

  • 63 Upnorthlurkin // Jan 20, 2010 at 9:16 pm

Huh?! Have you had a stroke?!

  • 64 EdistoJoe // Jan 20, 2010 at 9:18 pm

Sound advice on the financial advisor. One who knows how to protect your principal is a good way to start. The guys that always tell you you could be doing better or we can get you the higher return…there a dime a dozen out there. They will take their commissions and leave you with squat. Look for long term growth over short term gain if your the average working guy. Don't count on Social Security for anything.

  • 65 boberin // Jan 20, 2010 at 9:40 pm

I've had bad advisors and good ones. I had a good one when this mess began, he's still my man…no one saw this coming…so I can't blame and honest working man (my advisor) as he did not do me wrong. Banks/wall street done me wrong, Bush began helping them and Obiwan continued…and I didn't agree with either one, still don't…even while acknowledging that what they did may well have avoided an even larger mess that would have taken even longer to dig out of…but it takes some imagination to believe that line…from anyone.
If you believe that any person that had been elected a year ago would be popular now…you're kidding yourself. nobody can remain popular with 10% unemployment and housing values dropping…and no one could have avoided those things…except perhaps 10 years ago when these balls got rolling…but that's water under the bridge

  • 66 EdistoJoe // Jan 20, 2010 at 10:39 pm

Your reply seems to reflect a lot of the same sentiment as the voters of Mass.
on Tuesday. However Obama's drop in the polls reflects more on his policy agenda. The guy still is popular…but as a leader he's fading. I do hope you can work with your advisor to rebuild your financial well being. I know for many their retirement packages went sour when their companies failed or went south. I just happened to be in more conservative funds. I didn't lose …but I didn't hit any projected income targets the last 2 years. We are all waiting for better times and that is why Obama needs to focous on jobs and the economy. Hang in there and good luck.

  • 72 boberin // Jan 21, 2010 at 1:47 pm

Thet truth is no one knows what will happen if things go this way or that. It's all a crap shoot…you never know the full consequence of anything until you actually try it. This is pretty much the case for anything, life itself.
But folks that just want things to "stay the same" are dangerously kidding themselves. Nothing can/will "stay the same".
I liken it to "oldies" radio programming. Those stations (and there are thousands) prove that most folks develope their musical taste in high school/college and those tastes "freeze" right there. They are content to go through life listening to the same few thousand songs over and over and over. You either are that type or know many like that.
Things have to move on, they have to…but most folks won't hear of it. They'd rather reject ANYTHING new…out of hand…because it's new. You gotta give some things a shot

Bob, I can understand your fear about a company making money. It usually leads to jobs, and that would be terrible for Obama's efforts to keep non-government employees out of work.

Condolences to JCM on the loss of Air America.

Democrat party spokesman and Liberal guru Hugo Chavez calls The USA "God" in this 42 second clip at RedState.

    JL3rd:
Chavez would fit well in the Democratic Congress…make the lie big enough…tell it often enough…and sure enough, people will believe it. Geezzz, how many fruit cakes did this guy eat at Christmas? What a Nazi.

    Thought for the day :

“The kind of man who wants the government to adopt and enforce his ideas is always the kind of man whose ideas are idiotic.”

    - H. L. Mencken (1880-1956)

  • 90 JamesonLewis3rd // Jan 24, 2010 at 12:07 pm

Ah. The infamous H. L. Mencken. Interesting choice as a "Thought for the day" quotable.

I find his usage of the word "idiotic" to be the most revealing aspect of this so-called "thought." Only the very most elite of Elitists could produce such irony.

If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever.

    ~~George Orwell (1903-1950)

Orwell was a social critic, newspaperman, essayist, novelist during the same era.

    Off topic:

If you were a fan of "The Darlings" music from the "Andy Griffith Show", you have to see this group of outtakes from the Judy Garland show from about 1964. After clicking the link, skip to about 2 minutes into the clip for Jerry VanDyke introducing the Dillards:

A VERY encouraging Rasmussen poll on Evan Bayh, the lying liberal lapdog, posing as a ;"moderate": http://realclearpolitics.blogs.time.com/2010/01/2...

If we, ("Hoosiers"), can free ourselves of this liar, maybe when he comes up for reelection, we can remove that other liar that is posing as a "Champion of Hoosier Values" Dick Lugar!

  • 97 RAM1 // Jan 25, 2010 at 11:43 pm

I just heard the Obama sound byte, where he said he had hoped that Republicans and Dems would start playing "as a team".

In order for that to happen moron, you have to allow the Republicans into the huddle, or at least invited to "team meetings".

This guy is either brain dead, or he thinks we are!

The blatant undermining of our national security vis a vis international terrorists by ObaMao and Holder is an abuse of their constitutional responsibilities. Read and weep: http://article.nationalreview.com/422657/high-val...

A fitting and appropriate political cartoon, It is more true, than funny but, if you want funny, read the first three comments from Obama Kool Aid drinkers!

“I’d rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president.”

~ Barack Obama, in an interview with Diane Sawyer ( January 25, 2010 )

Uh … Mr. President … would you settle for "… a really awful one-term president …"?

You know what they say - two outa three ain't bad!

What the hell kind of answer is that???? Is he admitting that if he goes two terms he will be mediocre? A Disaster is more like it. You're right on the awful one and done…I just fear that he might take awful to new deminsions never seen before.

  • 104 JamesonLewis3rd // Jan 26, 2010 at 7:08 pm

The part that gets me is that he thinks he's "a really good" president.
