(2002-01-02) — The Pennsylvania State University has expelled a student for using his laptop computer, while in class, to take an online course offered by another university. The student claims he was just looking for something “more intellectually challenging.”
A Penn State spokesman said, “We are not opposed to students surfing the web during class, as long as they stick to appropriate sites like gaming, adult content and chatrooms. But when a student crosses the line like this, we have zero tolerance. I hope this serves as an example to others who are thinking of experimenting with the so-called ‘harder’ stuff.
The parents of the expelled student pleaded with the Penn State administration to show leniency to their wayward son.
“Take pity on my boy. He’s young,” cried his mother.
The father added, “He certainly didn’t learn that kind of behavior under my roof.”
