(2002-12-31) — Rep. Charles Rangel, D-NY, says he will introduce a universal health care bill this week, although most members of Congress will think it’s a military draft proposal.
“We’ve been looking for a way to get the government to provide health insurance for everyone,” said the lawmaker, “then it hit me. When I was in the military, Uncle Sam paid for the doctor and even provided the doctor.”
Although the medical coverage will only apply during a couple of years of mandatory military service, “it’s a foot in the door for universal health care,” he said. “Then when Mrs. Clinton is President, we can extend it to everyone because we’re all military-for-life now that homeland security is our number one priority. If you’re among the patriots helping the government spy on your neighbors, you’ll be covered.”
