(2002-12-08) — Glenn F. Tilton, the Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of UAL Corporation, has applied to replace Paul O’Neill as Secretary of the U.S. Treasury.
“I thought it was a good time for a career transition,” said Mr. Tilton, whose company is expected to declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy Monday. “I don’t like to toot my own horn, but if there’s anyone who understands the realities of our economy, it’s me.”
Mr. Tilton said he found the Treasury job posted at Monster.com, and sent in his resume “on a whim.”
“I was just surfing the net one day at the office, watching the stock plunge, calculating my paper losses, making prank reservations on IFlySWA.com, waiting for the machinist union leader to call, and then ‘Bing!’…up pops this Secretary of the Treasury opportunity.”
Mr. Tilton said he’s excited about the Secretary position, although he’s “not a real good typist. But I do have some experience filing. I’m going to do some of that tomorrow, as a matter of fact.”
