(2002-12-07) — New York Times writer Thomas Friedman referred to “Sister Souljah” in his column about the Bush Administration’s approach to preparing America for war.
The witty and erudite readers of the Times, mostly newspaper editors, applauded the obscure reference.
Times editor Howell Raines said the mention of the rapper without explanation “forces the reader’s mind to travel back 10 years to the first Clinton presidential campaign. Some say it’s obscure. I call it journalism. We’re making people think.”
It’s unclear what Ms. Souljah has to do with U.S. war plans, except that her last name sounds like the word “soldier”.
