(2002-12-08) — Members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), picketed in the nude, spattered with fake blood, outside a London grocery store after learning that Miss Turkey, Azra Akin, had been crowned Miss World.
“There are alternatives to the traditional turkey dinner,” said PETA spokesman Ingrid Newkirk. “This just shows how insensitive the Miss World organization is, especially so close to Christmas. We demand that Azra Akin be referred to as the former Miss Tofurkey.”
Tofurkey is a vegetable-based imitation turkey product that tastes just like turkey without all the flavor. PETA is a widely-respected organization that defends the right of animals by staging goofy, often-naked, protest events and ads.
