(2002-11-26) -The last three po`ouli birds known to exist were captured today in Hawaii, and a researcher says that despite their exotic color pattern and small size, they “taste like chicken.”
The scientist, who works with the Hawaii Division of Forestry and Wildlife, said, “If I had not captured and consumed these birds today, they would have become extinct, and no one would have ever known what they tasted like. I was going to save two of them as breeding stock, but they’re so small I really needed all three to make a meal.”
The expert said he also “enjoyed a nice glass of Chianti, and some small red potatoes swimming in butter.”
He hopes to publish his findings in the journal Nature.
