Surnow Quits '24', Helps Bush Block Torture Bill

by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace · 88 Comments · · Print This Story Print This Story

(2008-02-14) — Joel Surnow, executive producer of Fox’s terror drama '24', will leave the program immediately, the White House announced today, to help President George Bush block Congressional efforts to ban the CIA from using certain interrogation techniques.

The House measure would prevent the Agency from trying to extract information from terrorists using simulated drowning or a kind of sensory deprivation during which detainees are subjected to the droning of MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann for up to 15 minutes at a session.

President Bush will reportedly send Mr. Surnow to Capitol Hill as his “emissary of mercy” with a video compilation from six seasons of '24' called “So, You Think That’s Torture.”

The Hollywood writer-producer, a self-described “right-wing nut job”, will then host a tea for Congressional leaders and, the president said, “will engage them in dialog about dealing with people who have no sense of morality, justice or the value of human life.”

Asked by a reporter what he would do if Congressional leaders refused to talk with Mr. Surnow, Mr. Bush said, “Oh..they’ll talk. They will most definitely talk.”

Aye. God forbid we should actually employ any coercive measures to get terrorists to talk.
    That might save lives.
(In fact, it has saved lives).

Afterall, the “rights” of terrorists trumps the possibility of saving lives…right?

    (Um…no!).

Ah yes. The argument of pacifists. We certainly don’t wanna hurt the sensibilities of those who are too cowardly to fight for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
And we sure don’t wanna make terrorists uncomfortable.

News flash! Jesus wasn’t a pacifist.

    Ahoy, USS Ben:

I think you’ll discover you have found some real shipmates here; but, as for me I’m a landlubber, worse I’m a Democrat, and they say I’m a “troll”.

So, you’re one of them torture guys, eh? I might be willing to use torture, I just wouldn’t want to make it a hobby, and I wouldn’t want to soil Lady Liberty’s Robes doing it; so, if I did torture, it should be on ME, and not my great nation.

Ever use any of them “coercive measures” on an enemy your own self? Ever had’em used on you? Have you ever even seen a POW?

Do you think maybe we should just go ahead and get rid of those pesky Geneva Conventions altogether?

Like you, I’m no pacifist; but I think we should let the Iraqis settler their own differences, and turn our attention to that mother’s son who authorized the attacks of 911.

I think as long as he lives, anything else we do won’t be worth much. If there’s more you want to do, don’t you at least think he should number one on our list?

Red, the sketches are priceless. I’m sure w/o those the “next in line” would not know how to apply a drill to the hand or a cleaver to the wrist.
You are correct, we have much to learn but, perhaps with the help of those drawings we can pick up a few new ideas. Then we could proudly have reduced ourselves to their level.
Then again, perhaps the people we found hanging and such were bad people. Perhaps they had information that their captors really felt they needed. If that’s the case then what they did was fine.

USS Ben, do not “everthink’s” droppings at #10 discourage you from posting here. Like a greeter at Wal-Mart, “everthink” believes that it is his sworn duty to “welcome” every conservative Christian who posts here with insults and put-downs concerning their conservative views and their Christian faith. He will regale you with his fantasies about his supposed “ancestral heroes,” and his own fantastical “stories” about his brave service to our country…he was at Camp David, dontcha know? And, currently, “everthink” is claiming to be related to Barack HUSSEIN Obama. Wow…we’re being graced with the presence of either “Forrest Gump,” or Jon Lovitz’ Compulsive Liar character from SNL. “Yeah…Revolutionary War Heroes and Civil War Heroes, and Presidential candidates are all MY family members…yeah, that’s the ticket! Yeah…and I’m a Military Hero, too! Yeah…and I’m a grown man who’s supposedly served his country, who supposedly has worked and paid taxes, who claims phony ancestors and “cousins,” and still I’ve learned so little about the realities of life that I vote democrat!

The real truth is that “everthink” is a lying, evil, Christian-bashing, off-his-meds psycho who probably lives in his mother’s basement.

I also want to add that anyone here who believes “everthink’s” claims to ancestry and/or service, and tries to engage in honest, truthful debate with the buffoon is wasting their time. There isn’t an element of honesty, truth or honor about this “troll.” He just comes here to bait and insult people in an effort to make himself feel better. In other words, all of his postings are evidence of “delusions of grandeur.” Responding directly to the cretin feeds his delusional self-importance. He is to be pitied and ignored.

Right . Torture is a terrible thing,or even shooting people down or burning them up without a trial.
But of course Democrats only believe in doing this to American Citizens. Especially if they live in Waco and aren’t of a mainstream religion. Or did I miss the trial for David Koresh? I wonder if the Clinton white House tapped the phone lines ,of the Waco Complex? Oh , I forgot , Reno had them cut.

Bober Re#8: “It’s lucky that we have only tortured people guilty of something …

The U.S. can be said to have done so only by a very, er, tortured definition of the word. Indeed, there have been a few individuals who committed actual acts of torture; those people are prosecuted if they are discovered. But waterboarding qualifies as “torture” only under the sort of politically correct redefinition that get a playful third-grader suspended from school for “sexual harassment.”

There is not a government on this earth that wouldn’t torture a terrorist suspect that they believed had info that would save hundreds of their citizens’ lives. That said, there is no government on earth that would state that policy “up front”. Why is it necessary for America to do so?

Waterboarding or lopping off fingers, ala Jack Bauer, torture may need to be used for certain situations at certain times. It is of course a dirty business and should be avoided if possible and used as a last resort. It should also be kept secret. That’s how it’s done.

    Boberinyetagain,

I guess I don’t understand why you brought up the MOVE “bombing” as a contrast to Waco. Was there a point? Both were tragedies, of course. Was it the idea that Scrapplers would condone the MOVE deaths as justified while condemning the Waco exercise?

Just trying to understand, I can be a bit dense at times…

  • 40 gafisher // Feb 14, 2008 at 5:57 pm

Bober Re#34: Waterboarding, or various techniques which have lately been lumped under that name, has an old and awful history. It was outlawed for U.S. Military use under the Nixon Administration, though at least one soldier used the technique after that and was Court-Martialed when his action was revealed.

I haven’t been able to find the multiple executions you mentioned of foreign nationals executed for using some form of “waterboarding,” but under the current definition it’s difficult to determine exactly what was done to warrant this; in a world where suicide bombers are called “freedom fighters” and beheading is excused as a reasonable act, precise definitions are necessary to avoid misunderstandings.

In any case, the technique, even under the most carefully monitored conditions, has been illegal under any circumstances for U.S. forces for some time, so the current “torture bill” is obviously dealing with other methods, potentially anything from withholding shoelaces to providing too little chocolate.

I drove through a bad snowstorm last week, and it was torture. Oh, Senator …

    #60…

Were Obama to become President and Hillary VP, would she be expected to wear a burqa? And if not, why not?

On the bright side, it’d sure look better than those pant suits. Improve her facial qualities, too; couldn’t see the wrinkles, lines, frowns OR sneers!

But wait…there’s breaking news out of Colorado:

(Denver) An entire herd of white horses has been stolen from a ranch just 50 miles from Denver, scene of the 2008 Democrat Party National Convention.

Witnesses say they were driven off by a plump, funereal looking white male driving a stretched Cadillac Escalade SUV.

With Obama and Clinton neck-and-neck in delegate count and the very real possibility that neither will have enough votes to claim undisputed possession of The Democrat Party Nomination for President there is speculation that former politician and high-priest of Global Warming, algore, was behind the wheel of the SUV.

Appears the plan is for him to ride down the center aisle of The Democrat Convention immediately after the first inconclusive vote. He’ll throw himself into the fray, offering an alternative to Clinton and Obama and keep the party from self-destructing.

There is great fear that such an action by the delegates, who had been expected to unanimously back Clinton, might create massive unemployment the Chicago hitman community, worsening prospects of The U.S. economy sliding into recession!

Clinton operatives expressed confidence it would be a non-problem.

Say, do they still have those “ear trumpets”?

What do you think is going to happen with Josh and Harriet?

Time for the Supremes to do their thing? Of course Dumbyah will stomp his pardon stamp on’er. Then, maybe the courtett will have to do an encore about that, since those two have got the goods on him.

mkk & po - #?s 51 & 54 - odd you should mention it. I was stationed in Wheelus Air Base at Tripoli, Libya (1961-63).
While there I looked in on their Muslim faith out of curiosity. I was in my mid twenties and I learned enough to drop the subject like a hot potato!

I don?t know if this is true or not. Couldn’t verify it online or Snopes. I do know what I was told. It was so ridiculous I was convinced they were pulling my leg in fact, I still do, even though they swore on the Prophets beard that they were telling the truth,

I had heard this from other Airmen (didn’t believe them either) I wondered why all of the field workers wore white baggy pants tied tightly at the ankle?
It seems that when Muhammod returns he will be born of a man, but only to a man of the soil and the tightly tied ankles are to insure he won’t “land on the ground”. they are very serious about their rejection of homosexuality - except during their Holy month of Ramadan. Allah will, as a miracle, negate the physical impossibilities involved.

I still don’t believe it, but that’s the way it was told to me.

  • 71 Fred Sinclair // Feb 15, 2008 at 10:42 am

Libby Gone # 70 This is a very short sample:

    Cliff Kincaid

Campaign workers for Senator and presidential candidate Barack Obama are under fire for displaying a flag featuring communist hero Che Guevara. But Obama has his own controversial socialist connections. He is, in fact, an associate of a Chicago-based Marxist group with access to millions of labor union dollars and connections to expert political consultants, including a convicted swindler.

Obama’s socialist backing goes back at least to 1996, when he received the endorsement of the Chicago branch of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) for an Illinois state senate seat. Later, the Chicago DSA newsletter reported that Obama, as a state senator, showed up to eulogize Saul Mendelson, one of the “champions” of “Chicago’s democratic left” and a long-time socialist activist. Obama’s stint as a “community organizer” in Chicagohas gotten some attention, but his relationship with the DSA socialists, who groomed and backed him, has been generally ignored.

In 2007, the National Journal said that Obama had established himself as “the most liberal Senator.” More liberal than Sanders? That is quite a feat. Does this make Obama a socialist, too?

DSA describes itself as the largest socialist organization in the United Statesand the principal U.S. affiliate of the Socialist International. The Socialist International (SI) has what is called “consultative status” with the United Nations. In other words, it works hand-in-glove with the world body.

    Heirborn Ranger

P.S. Ironically HillBilly Inc. is the most conservative of all of them.

    Libby Gone
    Re: 70
    Are you are addressing me?

Libby Gone, when I choose the “everthink” handle, I thought of it as a more, or less playful way to say, “There is another way to view most subjects”. Not, “Don’t you everthink”? In fact, I had switched from the handle Laughing@You, because it was being taken too personally. Before that, I did use Laugh@This because it was intended to be “In Your Face”. I have used the handle “Warthog” a couple of times to facetiously address certain “chickenhawks”.

It was during all this, that Liger began posting too. I believe it was he, who posted under the name Donkey Punch, Cleveland Steamer, DirtySanchez.

At first, like most here, I did not have a clue the meaning of those names. I mostly only gave a cursory reading of his posts; but I thought he was a better writer than I was, and we agreed about Bush. I did see at least one handicapped slur; but I did not know if that handicap was real. Nevertheless, I should have called him on it! I’m sorry I didn’t.
Possum, said recently he was in a wheel chair, I didn’t know that! I once took a pretty good shot at his self pity and his bitterness about his mortality, maybe too strong. I learned Fred, was in a wheel chair after he seemed to threaten me. I believe Ms Rightwing may be in a wheel chair, I know she has health concerns.

I guess, I must have poked Beerme harder than I meant to about the picture at his site of him and his friends, and I said: “His house needed some paint”.
I’m sorry Beerme, your friends look like people worth knowing, and if you ever get that painting done, maybe you can help me with mine.

I did go to Pershing High School, and Cleveland Intermediate, and White Elementary. I used to work in “The Valley (of the shadow)” as it was known then. I worked the Detroit Riots (67 & 68). I have had a revolver pointed at my nose. No, I have “never fired a shot in anger”; but, I have fired more than once in fear.

I think, maybe, your work in prison has given you too much of a “turf mentality”. I’ve got more of a tax status, and civil rights mentality.

I did really did like Santini, a brilliant and good man! Sometimes we fought! When I see him next, we’ll Laugh@This. There are others here I like, and a couple I dislike bitterly! I pray about it, as well as a Democrat can.

So Libby Gone, about Obama: I really like him, I will vote for him, and I have just finished connecting his genealogy to mine own; but are you willing to seriously consider him?

You know after this, I going to go back to trying to chase you up a tree, in my “off the wall” way, don’t you?

I did not use the word “hate”. I really don’t hate anyone here. Everything is not always black, or white.

The tendency to distort the words of others seem to be a hallmark of this place.

Prettyold, I can’t ever remember agreeing with anything you have said; but somehow you seem to help me make my point.

Those words of yours, stung me badly; but, I have since come to be amused at some of the things you say.

  • 78 Darthmeister // Feb 15, 2008 at 7:49 pm

    Fred,

The lamestream media continues to abdicate its moral responsibility to inform the American people about Barack Obama being a staunch liberal socialist and in fact as a U.S. Senator he presently has the most left-wing voting record of any Senator.

Obama gets away with this because he’s the golden child of the leftists who overwhelmingly populate the liberal news outlets and he also engages in good natured obfuscation and non-aggression when asked difficult questions and then further deflects them with vapid rhetoric about “change”. Of course by “change” he means engaging in more failed liberal prescriptions.

Obama is a socialist through and through and its further evidence by ringing endorsements from the like of the little commie thug Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua. It probably won’t be long before the commie chump Hugo Chavez gives his endorsement. But those kinds of associations won’t phase the brain-dead moonbats who will vote for Obama come hell or high water.

It’s pretty common knowledge that sHrillary Clinton is a disciple of 60’s radical Saul Alinsky. The liberals have tried to white-wash this closet commie by dressing his radical theories in “socialist Democrat” language, but the facts still remain facts to those with eyes that see and ears to hear.

What most people don’t know is Barack Obama himself is heavily influenced by Alinsky’s Gramscian political philosophy. Obama actually taught workshops on Alinksky tactics at the ever so corrupt ACORN - this organization itself is a direct descendant of Alinsky’s Industrial Areas Foundation! Imagine that! Throw in some of the radical billionaire George Soro’s millions and its easy to see that there truly is a cleverly camouflaged communist fifth column which is propelling Barack Obama to the White House and some pretty left-wing Democrats into Congress. Of course it will take those who are willfully ignorant or have willfully blinded themselves to these dangerous connections.

And given Obama’s emotional magnetism, his soaring rhetorical flourishes, and his clever repackaging of liberal socialism for the ignorant masses, it’s pretty easy to see that the same kind of people who would vote for Messiah Obama this November will be the same kind of people who will sing their hosannahs to that global socialist of all time - known in the Bible as the anti-Christ or the Man of Perdition. Such a secular, charismatic world leader will make Obama look like a piker, a mere amateur when it comes to promising people what they want to hear. For three and a half years he will “feel their pain”. This global leader will be a master manipulator of emotions and the barking left-wing moonbats and maybe even a good number of Islamists will indeed see him as the latest incarnation of their much awaited messiah who will finally usher in a humanist socialist utopia and dispose of those troublesome Christian and Jewish “traditionalists”. But until then, Obama will have to do and will probably represent another step toward global socialism if he is coronated POTUS.

No, it would be so very, very wrong to expect sheep to be able to goose-step.

Where is Jimmy Carter when The Democrat Party could use a "uniter" to step up for the nomination to break the Hillary/Hussein deadlock?

  • 80 Beerme // Feb 16, 2008 at 12:09 pm

    ET,

I guess your “revealing” disposition is an attempt to clear the air, so to speak? Well, I am no social worker, so all that means little to me. As far as your poking a little too hard at me, please don’t concern yourself. I’m a big boy and the fact that my house needs paint is no more than a simple statement of fact. In fact it is one of the few statements of fact that I can recall seeing, signed by ET.

Your insidious (and repetitive) remarks about Santini’s postings being done on the government’s dime were, I’m sure, simply a friendly bit of ribbing. Your behavior regarding Possumtrot, Fred and Ms RW, was much more despicable.

You know full well the meaning of the phrase “ever fired a shot in anger” . I will not discuss it here unless necessary. I will do you a favor, though, since we’re all about “putting our cards on the table” and all. I will apply a “willing suspension of disbelief” regarding your identity being different from Liger, et. al.

Oh, and since you’re coming from a tax status and civil rights mentality, perhaps you can tell us all about your epiphany. You know, the one that caused you to change from a Goldwater Republican to an Obama Democrat. I’m sure it’s fascinating. Does it have anything to do with working the riots? Perhaps you did not “do the right thing”?

  • 81 everthink // Feb 16, 2008 at 1:57 pm

    Beerme,

I appreciate your “willing suspension of disbelief” position about the “false witness” statement you made against me.

As for the rest, well, it was my best effort; but I still think that “bullets whistling by your ear” thing was over the top.

My political “epiphany”, was to leave the extreme right, very much the way Goldwater did, and move left to a broader more “middle of the road” position. Principal is very often ambiguous. Politics has been called “the art of compromise”. War is the refusal to compromise. Too often wars are fought by proxy of the loyal and brave, while the instigators only theorize.

It may not look that way from your prospective, but that may mean your vision is impaired. I’m with the Democrats now, and have been for awhile, they don’t own me; but the Republicans I like, you call RINO.

Next time, just make sure of your facts, before you smear me. Lord knows, I leave plenty of other openings.

    Beerme,

“You know full well the meaning of the phrase “ever fired a shot in anger” . I will not discuss it here unless necessary.”

You know, I just can’t let that pass again, you make me sound like some kind of shirker, draft dodger. So, let’s make it necessary!

I volunteered for service in the Regular Army of the United States. I raised my right hand, and swore an oath to my nation to do everything that oath entailed. I served in select unit performing duties related to the security of the Commander-In-Chief. I completed the six-year obligation of that oath honorably.

When I left the service, my security clearance required that to be “debriefed”. What you think you know, … is just that! It is true, I never served in combat, but if I would have, if so ordered.

You have equated the danger of your life in Detroit to serving in the peacetime military, and every time you do that, you spit on my uniform.

    ET

I grew up in Detroit too!

  • 83 prettyold // Feb 16, 2008 at 10:05 pm

I don’t believe anyone here is spitting on anyone’s Uniform . Not a uniform that was worn in the service of our country ,The United States of America. All who served in any way deserve and get our thanks and our respect. So I do thank you ,all of you ,where ever and however you served. Clerk Typists,Cooks, Military Police,Infantry,Pilots ,Truck driver, they are all necessary and important . And I do know ,you do the job you are told to do ,in most cases.
So let’s not nitpick about something like this.
Now let’s have a really hot nasty Nitpickin’ about Obama ,Hillary and McCain. Oh and Huckabee.

So ET, how long have you been gray? Believe it or not, everything is black and white, if you have enough knowledge and understanding. Too many are just not looking to know or understand because it requires them to acknowledge faults or to change something they want to do more than live according to the Word of God. It takes courage to keep things in proper view, but when you are looking for the easy way out gray always looks good. Right is always right, wrong is always wrong, good is always good, evil is always evil. Truth is always truth, we can fool people most of the time, no one will ever fool God.
