Obama Tries Reagan Mantle, Hillary Gets Gore's

by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace · 42 Comments · · Print This Story Print This Story

(2008-01-20) — In a week that saw Sen. Barack Obama align himself with the revolutionary legacy of former President Ronald Reagan, Sen. Hillary Clinton showed in the Nevada Democrat caucuses that she bears the mantle of another historic political figure, former Vice President Al Gore.

Just as Mr. Gore won the popular vote in the 2000 race against then-Gov. George W. Bush, Sen. Clinton Saturday won the popular vote in the Nevada caucuses, but Sen. Obama won more delegates.

“Like many Democrats, I’ve always said Al Gore is my president,” Sen. Clinton said. “And now the people of Nevada can say, Hillary Clinton is our nominee, no matter what happens at the Democrat National Convention.”

Clinton supporters in Nevada have already begun distributing bumper stickers that say, “Don’t Blame Me, I Voted for Hillary”.

Sen. Obama reportedly phoned the former First Lady to congratulate her on winning the headlines in The New York Times, The Washington Post and elsewhere, despite losing the Nevada delegate count.

“I’m all about hope,” said Sen. Obama, “and it’s good see that Sen. Clinton’s supporters can maintain theirs despite her strategic failure. As exciting as winning a caucus vote can be, when it comes to casting a ballot at the convention, it takes a delegate.”

With the Speed Channel’s Barrett Jackson Car Auctions nearly finished in Nevada’s neighboring state of Arizona, my attention will soon be fixed on politics once more. They say money buys politicians, well it also buys Boss 429 Mustangs if you have a little pocket change lying around.

Thousands of hours, well seemingly thousands of hours of cars being strutted about like high fashion models and people throwing countless thousands, er millions of dollars about makes me realize several things:

    1. There is no shortage of money in our economy
    2. People don’t want Yugo knock-offs that get 45 miles per gallon, with or without extension cords
    3. Even the poor can feel rich for one week out of the year if their imaginations still work. I’m sorry if you grew up and lost your sense of believing in the tooth fairy and other mysterious things that visit in the dark.
    4. Mustangs still rule, though Hemi’s are still hot.
    5. Men will still spend money on foolish things like steel car crushers that breath fire and weigh a gazillion tons.
    6. Even women can enjoy hot cars, not necessarily hot men that drive them. Give me a Shelby Cobra, the open road and the only time I will need the quote/unquote hot man is to fill the gas tank, check the air in the tires and run over and get me a cold Coke Cola from the vending machine.
    7. If you put a rebel flag on a big yellow Dodge with horns that play Dixie, the rednecks (dressed like rich good ol’ boys ) will go absolutely nuts.
    7. And no, this is not a late night top ten list; Hillary ain’t got a chance when real men, who don’t eat Quiche, vote
8, 9, and 10 reserved for other Barrett Jackson viewers.

Isn’t it ironic that the Obama and the Hillary are getting civics lessons on Democratic Republic structure? And isn’t it ironic that one would love it and the other would be trying to tear it down (ala the lawsuit to shut down the precincts with the most delegates)?

Yep, as the scripture says, “He who digs a pit, falls into it,” and the Democrats have got a mighty big shovel.

While the Anasazi are-in a sense, I suppose-“Prehistoric” (Etymology: Navajo anaasází, literally, enemy ancestors), it really wasn’t all that long ago. Boberin,
Who better to want to emulate? President Reagan embodied the very best traits of not only conservatism, but of America as a whole. Maybe he seems a little deified in death, but whats wrong with heros? Is that not what inspires us? He made a huge positive impact on me in my formative years.
Maybe in time the nearly psychotic hate of President Bush will subside and history will judge him on his accomplishments, not just the negative assertations of unfulfilled, leftover hippies.

Well even with Bush controlling the climate and economy at least our leaders aren’t doing this…..
Ahmadinejad had criticised parliament, which is dominated by fellow conservatives, for overturning his decision to dissolve several institutions — including the Monetary and Credit Council, a key financial policy maker — as well as his abolition of summer time in Iran.

Now abolishing summer time is truly evil.

  • 27 conserve-a-tips // Jan 21, 2008 at 10:50 am

Boberin: I think that it has to do with the fact that Reagan verbally expressed, better than anyone, the real basis of conservatism. He didn’t just take action, but he explained so well, what he was doing. I agree with you that the candidates today have no right to claim anything in common with him because they are guilty of talking the talk (not very well I might add) but not walking the walk. To me, they are being very deceitful when they claim to be the next Ronald Reagan.

Except for Thompson and maybe Romney, they are trying to change the face of the Republican party and conservatism to fit a more liberal mindset. I really think that they think it will get them more votes. Unfortunately, they are going to find out that standing up for the truth and what is right will always win, while bending with the winds of what is popular will eventually take you down everytime.

The real problem is that they are only able to compare themselves-in a most hollow and shameful manner-with Reagan and unable to actually emulate the man. That does truly make me sad!

  • 30 Beerme // Jan 21, 2008 at 11:05 am

    c-a-t,

Very astute post! It makes me wonder whether it would be better to lose the election to the Dems and regain proper perspective, than to win a hollow victory by allowing the politician that wins it and all their ilk, to think that this new conservatism is what the people want…

And it is for that reason that I consider voting for a third party candidate instead of the Republican candidate. Haven’t decided, yet, but the idea of letting the power elite know that we’re dissatisfied is very appealing to me. Especially so if the Republican nominee is John McCain or Huckabee (or maybe even Romney).

I was around during the Joe McCarthy period. It’s only today that people are coming to grips with the deadly accuracy with which he unearthed communists here in America. They were playing a quiet undercover plan to take over America from within. All that is necessary is to weigh “Father Knows Best” and “Leave It To Beaver” of the fifties against “Sex In The City”, “The Simpsons” and “Will and Grace” that we have today, to see and understand their primary target is the FAMILY. Promoting homosexuals and their lifestyle - liberal judges, reversing state laws against sodomy, etc. They decry discrimination EXCEPT for the only approved form of discrimination: Christian bashing.

Today America is (celebrating?) the birthday of a major, big ticket communist - Martin Luther King, Jr. whose main claim to fame was having sex with more fair skinned, blue eyed blondes than John F. Kennedy. The FBI under the directive of J. Edgar Hoover they wiretapped his every cough and hic-cup. Under “A True Historical Examination” - ‘FBI bugs reportedly picked up 14 hours of party chatter, the clinking of glasses and the sounds of illicit sex - including King’s cries of “I’m f—ing for God” and “I’m not a Negro tonight!” (see Newsweek Magazine - January 19, 1998-page 62) he was shot and killed later that day.

This is what has been accomplished in barely 50 years of work by the communists Joe didn’t uncover. We have (excluding Fred Thompson) a miserable mess of socialist (Democrats) running for President, wearing Republican clothing. “If the Clintons or Huckabee becomes President then in 4 or 8 years the only difference between America and a sack of doo-doo will be the sack”. (Rush Limbaugh)

It was below zero all day here, the electric pallet jack on the dock came from Yale and would not hold a charge , hence no easy loading of the truck today. Did I mention that it was cold here? The old truck started right up, and died repeatedly…..but eventually was cooperative! It felt much cooler than the thermometer read, or am I getting soft in my near old age? Then I hear that Fred is maybe going to call off his campaign….if this is 2008 (what I have experienced so far) I ain’t real happy about it. Good news anyone? prettyold - thanks for stirring my memory. I have some friends in the USAF from down in Tennessee who used to sing this song written by Dee Gaskin.

    The Sun’s Coming Up

Once again I faced Satan this morning, And I battled him all the day long: But in my weakness God sent reinforcements, And at sundown I sang victory’s song.

    (Chorus)
And the sun’s coming up in the morning, Every tear will be gone from my eyes; This old clay’s gonna give way to glory, And like an eagle, I’ll take to the sky.

In a world filled with doubts and confusion, It’s so hard when you don’t understand; Oh, but I’ll stand on a solid foundation And I’ll hold to an unchanging hand.

    Repeat Chorus

I do love that song and those special friends from Tennessee.
