(2008-01-15) — The nomination of Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson today took on an air of inevitability, after the former senator from Tennessee announced that he believes Sen. Hillary Clinton could “whup my caboose” in the general election.
“You political journalism types flock to the guys you think Sen. Clinton could beat,” Mr. Thompson told the reporter at his news conference, “I figure once you see me as the inevitable general-election loser I’ll have more positive press coverage than McCain and Huckabee combined. The nomination is mine.”
Indeed, a new CBS News-Washington Post poll shows that 96 percent of Democrats who tell pollsters they’re Republicans favored Thompson after hearing that he fears Sen. Clinton can beat him.
Meanwhile, the majority of conservative voters in South Carolina, Michigan and Nevada said they plan to wait until the polls close this week before deciding how to cast their ballots, since by then they’ll know better which candidate is electable.

Your closing comment says it well, Scott. Far too many voters are basing their support on who they think others will vote for. If the majority of Republicans wanted Duncan Hunter but thought (as so many seem to) that he was “unelectable” the “prophecy” would be self-fulfilling.
Particularly in the Primaries EVERY voter MUST vote for the candidate who best represents their views, not the one they think represents everyone else’s.

Libby, you are assuming that an inaguration will take place in Jan 2009. Personally I think we will just barely have scratched the surface of the recount by then, should have about 45 states left “undecided”, waiting fof the courts to “decide” for them.

Whoa! Fred 08! nails the psychology of the voter-media-polls nexus again. Could he possibly be channeling the e-e-e-vil Karl Rove?

Wow. You know, I’m really torn here. The more I read about Thompson, the more I want him elected. Unfortunately, I’m one of those voters you’re talking about who look at the guy who can win versus the guy who should win. Maybe the American people will prove my cynicism wrong, but Thompson just doesn’t look like a modern Presidential candidate, and that seems to be all that matters these days.
Please note that I never underestimate the power of God to shape the world of man. However, quite often, God chooses to teach mankind by giving them exactly what they ask for. Remember the Israelites and King Saul? That worked out well…

On the subject of burning corn, which has caused the prices to soar on eggs, milk, cheese, milk, cornmeal and other food products, is a totality insane idea. The huge ethanol plants in Iowa and Minnesota are all government funded, otherwise corn oil would be $10.25 a barrel, not some outrageous artificially fixed price.
Farmers in Ohio are planting corn from fence row to fence row since the price of corn is so high. Wetlands are being drained and plowed under so everything suffers.
So has anyone ever sat down with paper and pencil and figured out how much gas and or diesel fuel is used to make a gallon of ethanol, plus transportation cost and cost of nasty chemicals to kill weeds and bugs.
Oil, on the other hand, is dead in the ground and last I looked we did not have to plant oil, nor fertilize and nurture it-plus chickens don’t like the taste of crude oil and would just as soon eat corn.
Now I have been told by ag-experts that hemp (not pot) is higher in the chemicals that create ethanol, it doesn’t require fertilizer and has numerous uses for the by products-plus folks don’t eat hemp, there for it will not destroy the food chain.
‘Nuff said. Now back to Hillary and Kusinich.

Court Allows MSNBC to Bar Kucinich
Wednesday January 16, 2008 2:01 AM
By KEN RITTER
Associated Press Writer
LAS VEGAS (AP) - The Nevada Supreme Court said Tuesday MSNBC can exclude Democratic presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich from a candidate debate.
Lawyers for NBC Universal Inc., had asked the high court to overturn a lower court order that the cable TV news network include the Ohio congressman or pull the plug on broadcasting the debate Tuesday night with Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards.
An hour before the debate, the state Supreme Court’s unanimous order said that blocking the debate unless Kucinich got to participate would be “an unconstitutional prior restraint” on the news network’s First Amendment rights. The justices also said the lower court exceeded its jurisdiction by ordering Kucinich’s participation even though he first requested and was denied relief from the Federal Communications Commission.
“It’s a matter of being on stage and answering questions. That’s the issue,” lawyer Bill McGaha argued for Kucinich during a hearing before four justices in Las Vegas. Three other justices participated by closed-circuit video conference from Carson City.
Donald Campbell, a Las Vegas lawyer representing NBC Universal, accused Kucinich of trying to make a jurisdictional “end run” around the FCC and federal courts by suing in Nevada state court to be added to the debate.
FCC broadcast rules do not apply to cable TV networks, Campbell said, adding that forcing MSNBC to add Kucinich or not broadcast the debate amounted to prior restraint and would be a “clear and unequivocal” violation of First Amendment press freedom.
“Mr. Kucinich’s claim … undermines the wide journalistic freedoms enjoyed by news organizations under the First Amendment,” Campbell said in his appeal.
Campbell said MSNBC decided to go with the top three candidates after the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries. Kucinich drew less than 2 percent of the Democratic vote in the New Hampshire primary, after attracting little support in the Iowa caucuses.

ET, if you think that one man has that much power, then I have a bridge to sell you in the Sahara. The fact is, if you look across the world, things are shaky because of pathetic credit practices. It’s 1928 all over again. Every developed country, down to its youngest worker is spending too much and wanting too much. Our country was doomed when politicians on both sides of the isle told us that we deserve it all. We deserve free health care. We deserve great housing whether we can afford it or not. We deserve jobs whether we are willing to work or not. We deserve new cars. We deserve retirement money. We deserve to have our lungs protected from cigarette smoke. We deserve, deserve, deserve.
Well, we don’t deserve a doggone thing. When we expect anything, self becomes center and we are willing to give up all freedom to get what we expect. It is troubling what is going on in this country, especially when it comes to attitudes like yours toward the person who is the president. Clinton didn’t have the power to make my life better or worse and neither does Bush. Only I have that power and I don’t care what the circumstances are, I have a choice to be content or to be a self-centered, demanding crybaby.

A Condensed Version of History
For those who slept through World History 101…… here is a condensed version….
Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic hunters/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the
summer and would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.
The two most important events in all of history were:
1. The invention of beer, and
2. The invention of the wheel. The wheel was invented to get man to the beer, and the beer to the man.
These facts formed the foundation of modern civilization and together were the catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups:
1. Liberals
2. Conservatives.
Once beer was discovered, it required grain and that was the beginning of agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet, so while our early humans were sitting around waiting for them to be invented, they just stayed close to the brewery.
That’s how villages were formed.
Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to BBQ at night while they were drinking beer and protecting their women and children from the riff-raff and liberals. This was the beginning of what is known as the Conservative movement.
Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly BBQ’s and doing the sewing, fetching, hair dressing and later, taxing them when they were made a village leader for a time. This was the beginning of the Liberal movement.

OK, so totally off the subject, but rather interesting…I was reading Genesis and the account of Abraham’s covenant with God, resulting in circumcision. At the time, Ishmael was 13. I got curious, since Ishmael is supposed to be the father of the Arab/muslim nation. I did my research and sure as shootin’ Muslims are very devout about the ceremony of circumcison - only in very traditional circles, it is not performed at 8 days (the Jewish tradition) but as an ushering into puberty. A big deal is made, with a party and the gift of money for the guest of honor. He is dressed in robes with an ornamented turban, etc. and pictures are taken during the ceremony - eeewww. More modern Muslims have opted to go the hospital route at birth, but traditionalists still have their own “Sunnetci” or circumciser. Loud music is played, possibly to drown out the cries of the victim. Very interesting accounts here.
And so I got to thinking…perhaps we have the answer to what Bin Laden’s problem is…perhaps we should recognize that he is suffering from latent PCS - post circumcision syndrome. Perhaps all he needs is some Prozac.

JamesonLewis3rd - Re #64 - thank you for your consistency it’s noted and appreciated. God is blessing America by way of His mercy rather than His justice.
I believe that in His Word he has a message for America (and the world of today.) that is all too often overlooked.
Today - if someone says the name Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun, Joe Stalin or Adolph Hitler, very few people start to shake or quiver in fear, although, in their day and time, the mere mention of their name would have been reason for anyone to shake or quiver in fear. The bearers of those names are dead and buried - no one fears them today. You can talk about them all you wish and there are few if any who would object.
Strangely enough there is one name that pre-dates those men who still, even today, will cause men to shake and quiver in fear. The most hated and feared name in all of history - Jesus Christ. Now his fathers last name is not Christ so “Jesus, the Christ” is more appropriate. His early followers were “….. commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus (Acts 4:18) although His enemies were many, it was His name that brought them fear.
His enemies today aren’t called “Scribes and Pharisees” they go by the varied names of Liberals, Democrats, Communists, Socialists, Muslims, etc. but regardless of the name they use - they are bound together by a shared hatred of the name of Jesus. Because unlike Genghis, Attila, Joe or Adolph there remains the fear that just maybe, He might still be alive - He might be who He said He was. Fear: trembling, shaking and quivering in abject fear! That NAME must be erased! - but Jesus knew them then and He knows them today and He spoke to them all.
John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature; for he is a liar, and the father of lies.”
Now if that does not accurately describe todays Liberals and His other and many enemies then it can’t be done.
Yes JL3rd: America is blessed, in spite of ourselves and our just due, I give thanks and praise Him for His mercy.

e.t. (aka ‘neverthink’) “May the Lord rebuke you!” May I go so far as to inquire - For what? For quoting Jesus, who always spoke the truth?
I really don’t understand what you’re talking about.
To ask for God to rebuke me is by implication charging me with having committed a sin. So, in the words of Jesus - to continue: John 8:45 “But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me.
John 8:46 “Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me?
John 8:47 “He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.â€
Therefore by the evidence you yourself have provided, “…you are not of God.” and therefore have no call, cause or reason to ask anything of God, except His forgiveness and salvation.

Darth, nice post (#47)!
I’ve heard it before but it sure does fit the bill!
I am drinking a finely crafted American Premium Pilsner, right now. Mmmmhmmm, good!
(It’s really hard to wait for these beers to finish “lagering”, ’cause they’s soooo good!)

Where does this “It’s too late for Fred “come from?
It’s January 18, for corn’s sake. The election is still in November ,isn’t it?
Neither Iowa nor New Hampshire speak for me.
Just how many people have voted in the primaries and caucuses so far? A miniscule amount compared to all the citizens of the USA.
So Hillary decided to start running way last May or whenever, and the MSM were thrilled ,do the rest of us have to follow like Lemmings and fall right off the cliff?
I always thought the Conventions were the proper place to pick the Candidates.
But no ,we have let Hillary and the MSM tell us how elections are to be run in this country. And we’re letting her old cohorts choose our Republican Candidate. I don’t need Dick Morris to tell me which guy I like.Sure he likes McCain ,because the Clintonistas have gobs of dirt on him in their dirtbag.
Read the memos from Jay Rockefeller concerning Hillary’s disasterous Health care plan ,back in the 90’s, if the MSM allow them to get printed.
