Hillary Sorry for Backer's Hussein-Obama Reference

by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace · 39 Comments · · Print This Story Print This Story

(2007-12-18) — Former presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton today apologized to rival Barack Obama for any offense he may have taken from the way former Sen. Bob Kerry endorsed her candidacy this week.

Mr. Kerrey, who ran for president in 1992, in his endorsement remarks mentioned that Sen. Obama’s middle name is Hussein and that he has Muslim ancestors, “not that there’s anything wrong with that.”

Sen. Clinton, in a written statement said: “While I’m grateful for Bob’s endorsement, which generated headlines across the country and even some stories that briefly mentioned me, his choice of words may have left some people with the impression that Sen. Obama is related to Saddam Hussein — a fanatical dictator who gassed his own people, cut off ears and tongues of dissidents and littered Iraq with mass graves. Any implied comparison was purely accidental, I’m sure.”

“There’s nothing to be gained,” Mrs. Clinton said, “by repeating Barack Hussein Obama, Barack Hussein Obama. It’s as immature as noting the similarity between the name Obama and Osama bin Laden.”

She called Mr. Kerrey’s reference to Sen. Obama’s Muslim relatives “fundamentally irrelevant, and radically inappropriate.”

“When you think about it, Barack’s body is made up of cells,” she said, “but that doesn’t mean he’s connected with al Qaeda terror cells. It’s silly, you know, to link Hussein, Obama, Osama, Islam, al Qaeda.”

Sen. Obama said he took no offense at the endorsement remarks, noting, “After all, Bob Kerrey’s last name sounds like John Kerry, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a failed former presidential candidate, whose political life will be a mere footnote in the history books, if he’s lucky. And of course Hillary Clinton has the same last name as…well…you get the point.”

The Illinois senator added, “At least he didn’t remind people that I’m related to Dick Cheney, which could actually hurt my chances in the Democrat primaries.”

“Former presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton…”

I must say, I like the sound of that! :-)

    No offense taken??

  • 3 gafisher // Dec 18, 2007 at 9:51 am

Kerrey, Kerry; no wonder the Dem Party is so toothless! It’s amazing they can still manage a biting comment now and then, though never incisive.

Hillary-ous! Another great article, Scott. The funny thing is, I could actually see her saying this… :)

  • 5 Fred Sinclair // Dec 18, 2007 at 10:16 am

JK - Right! I could see it too and I could hear Rush’s using it (with Scott’s permission, of course) as a parody on his show.

    Osama, Obama,

    Dalai Lama,

Your ol’ grandma in her pink pajama,

Sitting on top of Mount Fujiyama,

Recording the election in a docudrama,

Filmed in a full color panorama,

Take your banjo down to Alabama,

And hitch a ride on a boat to Grand Bahama.

Sure wish I was in Minnesota. That is home to me-not Ohio.

    C.a.t.

Did you get my e-mail or did it get iced up and fall out of the world-wide-whatever they call it.

At least if your name is Hussein you don’t have to worry about Christmas. I am through with it and hoping it will soon go away. I’m even turning Grinchy green. Anyone one have a happy pill?

Yes, the Silliness Factor Quotient Index has begun to skyrocket as of late and is likely to continue to escalate with increasing ferocity not only until November but on into the distant future (or until the population of Earth goes mad, whichever comes first).

I’m starting to wonder if, no matter who wins, we’re not in Big Trouble…..

Ms RW, if I don’t like the words in the box I hit the refresh button and get new ones.

I heard on Hannity yesterday about how they are trying to remake sHrillary into a nice person (my interpretation) and I thought of Mary Poppins, if I would have had time I would’ve attempted to call into Rush and suggest he use the song “Just a Spoonfull of Sugar” as an update theme song for her. Seems very appropriate to me.

  • 19 mindknumbed kid // Dec 18, 2007 at 9:39 pm

    push ?

I have tried the notify me box twice and it doesn’t appear to work. Anyone else try it?
Ain’t there a better way of beating spam ?

  • 20 mindknumbed kid // Dec 18, 2007 at 9:42 pm

    kick, shove, scream, etc…..

This wasn’t so bad before the word box came along!!

  • 21 mindknumbed kid // Dec 18, 2007 at 9:48 pm

I don’t mind the word box, but sometimes with the stupid lines running through them I can’t tell what they are, especially if it is a word that I don’t recognize.

  • 22 mindknumbed kid // Dec 18, 2007 at 10:08 pm

Sure, Obama is a Muslim…..and I suppose John Kerry is a Vietnam veteran too!
How about the Inquirer doing a hit piece on Oprah? I’m sure that has nothing to do with her giving Osamaobama her support. Talk about ruthless cold conniving bunch of people, what if it is all a pack of lies and Oprah and old Stedman get into a big fight, somebody pulls a gun out and one of them is killed ? Would there be any remorse ?
Not that I give a hoot one way or the other about any of them, or their lives, but I’m just sayin’ it looks like sHrillary collecting on a favor or maybe invoking a threat to get Oprah drug through some mud, sending her a message, etc. Just seems so cheap and dirty, like politics.

  • 23 mindknumbed kid // Dec 18, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Here we go AGAIN, all of the pushing, shoving, and violence. When will it all end?!

  • 24 onlineanalyst // Dec 18, 2007 at 11:00 pm

Wasn’t it Kennedy in the midst of one of his own bloviations, who first stumbled in pronouncing Obama’s name? Didn’t he call him Osama Obama?

  • 25 Libby Gone // Dec 19, 2007 at 7:00 am

whyounce chooass Osama ba lama, osama bin laden, obama, I said osama bin (hic) lama bama.

Yes, OLA, it was Orca who first mispronounced Barry’s name…(he used Barry in college you see). Okay, that takes the cake for the clumsiest sentence I’ve composed in a while! Anyway, you can all be jealous now!! I was blessed yesterday to meet and spend a few hours with the beautiful, gentle and gracious Maggie!! We had a wonderful visit! She perfectly fits my vision of a southern lady. I hope you all get a similar opportunity!!

  • 27 upnorthlurkin // Dec 19, 2007 at 8:33 am

I’m calling Maggie’s visit, Up North, Scrapple Face 2 Face!! It was a huge success! 100 % turn-out. We’re thinking of taking the whole thing south though…maybe we can meet up with the original somewhere warmer!

  • 28 Ms RightWing, Ink // Dec 19, 2007 at 8:33 am

Rats. I lost another comment. (Egg frying on my head as face turns fire red)

Things that make me go grrr

    upnorthlurkin

Hope you gave her some glugg to warm her fingers and toes. Sigh, wish I was there also. Too bad though she didn’t see Minnesota in the summer, especially Itasca State Park

Let us meditate on the letters sign in -ummm (fingers touching and body sitting in the Lotus position)

We’re all hoping for that opportunity as we look forward to Face2Face, Rally ‘08.

  • 30 upnorthlurkin // Dec 19, 2007 at 8:43 am

Mornin’ Ms RW!! I just emailed you!! I’m meditating as we speak! Our outdoor activities had to be cut short as Maggie wasn’t familiar with the term parka!! This morning it’s a mere 4° so I’m glad we met yesterday!! (Actually, her luggage was delayed a few days so I’m pretty sure her long johns and down coat must’ve been in her suitcase!) Lucky for her, we’ve not bought into this global warming crap and actually burn lots of fossil fuel to heat a couple of our buildings!!

ot - I think I’m getting old - Being curious I’ve asked 20 women in my church: “Do you get much tatting done these days?”

20 out of 20 had not even a clue - I was dumbfounded my mother spent uncountable hours tatting. Has tatting become a lost art - or for that matter, a lost word?

I wonder how many Scrapplers have done any tatting lately?

  • 32 upnorthlurkin // Dec 19, 2007 at 9:02 am

Fred, I can’t see well enough to tat. I do however, cherish the tatting I inherited from my Grandma! I’m not sure but I think “tat” in today speak is short for tatoo! I know, I know….you were being funny!

Having had the opportunity to spend time with Maggie on two different occasions, I completely agree with the “beautiful, gentle and gracious” assessment of the dear “Southern lady.” :-) Glad you two had a good time getting together!!

  • 34 Maggie // Dec 19, 2007 at 11:47 am

    Good Morning all’
After reading the comments fron Up North Lurkin and dabunny, I wondered who they were talking about and took a look in the mirror.

Up North is a beautiful and gracious Northern lady and bleessed my heart when she said “you betcha”.She also came bearing gifts , momentos of North Dakota.
Yes,I did dress like a Southener in a light weight suade jacket, but the weather was agreeable.
The pristine beauty of the long, snow covered stretches of uncluttered land is something to behold.”The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament showeth His handiwork”.
They can try to take Jesus out of everything else but NOT our hearts.
PS:Try to make it a point to meet up with your Scrappler friends,it will be a blessing.

Here’s a little thing I read the other day that I think has Bumper Sticker quality:
People who demand that others “believe in evolution” are looking for religious dogma in the wrong places.

  • 37 Just Ranting // Dec 19, 2007 at 4:04 pm

My dogma ate my paper on evolution.

As I sit here and/or putter around this vicinity with the doors and windows open on a nearly-windless, sunny, 67° afternoon listening to Out of Our Heads (1965), The Rolling Stones’ Fourth Album, I can’t help thinking:

My, my, my, things sure have changed from when I was 15.

  • 39 JamesonLewis3rd // Dec 19, 2007 at 6:35 pm

    On a side note:
It makes me want to expectorate; the way the MSM and their entourage of Obsequious Narcissists expect a person to apologize for daring to utter the Name of Jesus the Christ, my Lord and Savior, even during Christmas (a paid day off I am sure they will gladly take).
And my gag reflex goes spastic whenever I witness sniveling capitulation to their slimy expectations.
These are the same cretins who thought it was just horrible/laughable when Iran (or whoever that was) banned the use of the word “pizza” a while back. I’ll bet 20USD none of those gutless misanthropes went over there and ordered any.

    Merry Christmas!
    Happy New Year!
    God Bless You!
