(2002-11-16) — Hans Blix, head of the U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission, said he will not tolerate Western spies on his team in Iraq.
“No one on the team will be allowed to look at anything secret,” said Mr. Blix. “If they accidentally see something secret, they are not permitted to tell anyone.”
Iraq, of course, has no weapons of mass destruction.
Under the terms of U.N. Resolution 1441, Iraq will present a list of those weapons it does not have to the U.N. Security Council by December 8. The list will include factories where weapons of mass destruction are not being made, and scientists who are not developing them.
“We must have the trust of the Iraqi government,” said Mr. Blix. “We expect to spend the next year or so going to places where nothing much is happening. If they don’t trust us, they might not show us their best aspirin factories.”
