With Bush in Iraq, Dems Halt Call for U.S. Withdrawal

by Scott Ott · 68 Comments

(2007-09-02) — As news broke that President George Bush had landed in Iraq Monday, Democrats in Congress quickly introduced a measure to “keep all U.S. personnel of any military rank in Iraq indefinitely.”

“We have reconsidered our opposition to the surge and the U.S. occupation,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV. “As long as the commander-in-chief joins the war on terror over there, we won’t fight it over here.”

Why didn’t the Democrats think of something like this when Pelosi was in Iran?
Hey Congress ,how about a law stating ,”Any Politician who visits a Middle-Eastern country ,has to stay.”? Excepting Israel , of course.

Beerme liked the scrapple, as did I. I can’t speak for anyone else on that subject. I’m guessing Mr. & Mrs. Beerme will be last to get home.

Last I saw Hawkeye was at a rest stop on the PA Turnpike; we got there at the same time quite by chance, since he didn’t have breakfast with the rest of us this AM.

Onlineanalyst should have been home first, because she lives closest to our rendevous site.

Scott is quite tall, and has a great family.

Ms RightWing got a ride on my Harley…

I find is funny…President Bush has been to Iraq twice as many times as Hillary, Kerry and Edwards, but of course they supported the War back then.

Obama and Teddy the swimmer have never been there.

Charmingtail, don’t you know that if Hillary, Edwards, Kerry, Teddy or Obama go to Iraq they might be accused of supporting the war — never mind the troops?

    Dear Scrappleface community,

I must admit that I am deeply hurt that I wasn’t invited to the mutual admiration BBQ this weekend.

Me, Mrs. Liger and the Tater-Liger would have gladly jumped in the gas-guzzling SUV and joined you all to wax nostalgic about the good ol’ days of the republican majority, heterosexual senators, high opinion polls and a government for the people, by the people. Alas, perhaps we’ll come next year…

  • 23 conserve-a-tips // Sep 3, 2007 at 5:50 pm

James, I read that about Edwards. All I could think of was his poor wife who did have regular checkups and who is dying of cancer anyway. I’d swear that Edwards really thinks that he has so much power that he can force all of us to behave however he thinks that we should. Unfortunately, he calls himself a Christian while totally ignoring the fact that God is not a puppet master and allows us to make our own mistakes and our own choices. In Romans it even says that because man chose to do his own thing, God turned him loose to do so. If God doesn’t force us to behave, but allows us to find out the hard way, then who does Edwards think he is? I guess that Edwards (and Hillary and Obama and countless other liberals) thinks that if God isn’t going to do it, then maybe he’d better. Arrogant so-and-so.

  • 25 Ms RightWing, Ink // Sep 3, 2007 at 8:04 pm

Okay Scrapplers, the last comments posted were erased by the Vast RightWing Conspiracy chipmunks who followed me everywhere I went this past weekend.

It was time to come home today, I am sorry
to say. I think I could trade the bunker in for an old farmhouse there, although I said I would never move any further east than where I am.

I am going to tell you folks to get your reservations in early for next year, though it is not I to say when or where the next gathering will be, but the cabins are nice and the price is more than reasonable. I am getting the next cabin down because the bathrooms were uphill both ways from our little abode.

Although the bathrooms were separate from the cabins they were clean, modern and had private showers. There are some cabins with bathrooms but I don’t know the prices. The stoves were newer models and the fridge and microwaves were very nice.

Yes, I did get to ride Camojack’s Harley though we stopped at a cafe that wasn’t opened yet and had to go to Sommerset to eat but I didn’t think I could get my legs back over the bike again. It is a real swell ride and his Harley is real pretty.

It was way cool hobnobbing with fellow Scrapplers and yes we did eat Scrapple for breakfast. It wasn’t to bad if you didn’t read the ingredients. As a matter of fact, we feasted like first class oinkers all weekend including a huge going away breakfast at Eat ‘n Park.

There was plenty of campfiring and beware about rumors that state I sat about smoking Cuban cigars and sipping expensive wines. I did not sip any wines :-) We did have a few stories and lots of laughs though.

    We also had snoring contests.

Scott & family dropped by yesterday after we returned from Falling Waters (Frank Lloyd Wright’s house) and a really cool place called Ohiopyle which was a whitewater river.

Saturday part of the gang went shopping in Ligonier and I kind of slumped about the town square. There was lots of shops and one newsstand full of grouchy men.

Though all we saw and did was great it finally did me in and tonight I feel like falling over dead. I used my walker when I am more used to my chair so I am a bit lumpy in the brain so I will end the first chapter here.

I hope Mr and Mrs Beerme made it home okay. They are a hoot, as is/was Hawkeye, Camojack and onlineanalyst…I will say goodnight to all as well as our little mouse friend.

    PS

The t-shirts are really fab so get one.

It was nice waking up in my bed this morning and not having to step over bodies in the dark. Ladies, if we pick this spot again next year I suggest we get the cabin with “terlets” so we don’t have to go out and water the cabbage patch.

Did I tell you we had Camojack sleeping under the kitchen table? Bodies everywhere. We had to put him there so we gals wouldn’t step on him during our mid-night walks.

I am still giggling at numerous events over the event. Don’t feel bad about not making iit-just start planning for next Labor Day. I’m casting my lots for the Park once again.

    ****************************************************

I don’t think I wrote about the most surprising event. Saturday morning I was sitting on the picnic table drinking my coffee and trying to get the caffeine to focus my eyes. So there I sat staring at a huge Beech tree wondering whose name had been carved iin the tree those so many years ago. I finally said to Mike (Beerme) if the name was who I thought it was.

Sure enough it said FACE to FACE 1984. Now, we decided the T-Shirts would be Face to Face Scrappleface. Just how weird was that???

    Hi everybody,

Sorry to check in so late. Yes, I did make it home just fine. Really enjoyed the “Face2Face” (aka “ScrappleFest”). It was really great to meet some fellow Scrapplers. The weather was simply terrific. As the saying goes, a good time was had by all.

On Monday, since the event was so close to the Shanksville crash site of United Airlines Flight 93, I decided to stop in. A Park Ranger gave an excellent talk on the subject and showed some photos. I started to get a bit choked up. Will try to post some pics at “View From Above”.

As Camo mentioned, I bumped into him again at a rest stop on the Turnpike. There was a bit of serendipity going on during this whole thing. For example, a tree carving we found right outside the cabin “Face to Face 1980″. How coincidental is that?

BTW Camo, I got stuck behind a slow-poke and you blew past me in the Kittatinny Tunnel. I caught up with you a few miles later and followed you until we parted ways a couple of exits later. I don’t think you knew I was back there. My car is a pretty common model.

Ms RightWing is a fantastic story-teller. Beerme makes some great home brew. Mrs Beerme is a dedicated bonfire builder. And special thanks to Onlineanalyst for pulling the whole thing together and buying the food.

Which reminds me. I owe you some money OLA for the Falling Waters thing. I will send you an e-mail.

For those of you Scrapplers who couldn’t make it but wanted to be there, we really missed you. But it was a good opportunity to talk about you behind your backs… (just kidding).

    Best regards…

“of any military rank” - with the rank of “Commander in Chief” I suppose the Democrat Congress figured that would keep the President in Iraq “indefinitely”? - Wrong.

Could be, as Commander in Chief, he might designate Pelosi and Reid as “Outpost Scouts” and station the both of them in Iraq on the Iranian border to relay back any suspicious activity that might need attention. Their tour of duty could be for the duration. (which would relieve them of the worry about reelection). He could arm them with reams of blank resolutuions and subponeas.

Last to check in with a brief “report” on Face2Face Scrappleface© Rally ‘07 because (1) just as it took forever to load up the car for the trek home, it took even longer to unload it and put stuff away, (2) even though our farewell breakfast (Thanks, camo!) put me “geographically” (Thanks again, camo!) closer to home, I managed to follow some Sunday drivers who didn’t know that it was Monday, and (3) I felt like a zombie from all of the fresh air and activity (and lack of sleep— Did anyone point out how much and how tunefully Scrapplers snore? Now, of course, I don’t snore-heh! We won’t get into the bathroom breaks necessary for some people!)

Anyway, I was pleased to be host for our initial gathering and like the idea for its being the venue for future ones since Kooser State Park is relatively accessible for our eastern and western travelers and sits so close to turnpike exits. We barely scratched the activities to do and sites to visit in our busy weekend. All are within a fifteen to 30-40 minute or hour’s ride away. Communal (big) breakfasts and suppers allowed folks to follow their bliss during the day. And it’s always to chill out at the park during the day doing plenty of nothing, swimmng at the lake, or playing games or cards.

Our campfire chats and shared meals were a great opportunity to have laughs and conversation.

We missed the chance to meet many of you, but you were in our thoughts and conversations. (Now, it was difficult to wean ourselves away from our computers for several days, but we survived the withdrawal.)

Next year, I suggest that we plan to meet during the weekend or week before Labor Day for as long as our happy campers wish to stay. This way, we won’t interfere with holiday family gatherings, and the weather will be comfortable.

The cabins hold four to nine people, so there are lots of options for sharing. Tenting and RV sites are available, too. The important point is to make reservations ahead of time because the park fills up with family reunions. Once the new year (2008) begins and we determine a date, I will post contact numbers for the reservation system. It’s easier to cancel if your plans change than to be disappointed at not being able to be “on campus” with the rest of us.

A very special thank you to M/M Beerme for giving up their privacy and letting some of us share their space when the cabin became HQ. They were generous in so many ways and a delight to meet.

The camaraderie of all made for a memorable experience. The crowning highlight was the visit from Scott Ott and his beautiful family, who traveled out of their way to share some fellowship with us. (Their pie contribution was no slouch either- yummy!). Our beloved blogger is TALL, has a masterful radio voice, and is as dryly humorous in person as he is on site. Thank you, Scott, for sharing this time with us.

Tee-shirts: I have three L’s and two XL’s left. I just went to the graphics business to place further orders for some XXL’s and XXXL’s. I can take orders for the ones I have on hand or for other sizes in the next few days. Let me know here or by email if you want one and the size that you need. The shirts cost $11.50 for a decent quality, pre-shrunk souvenir; I’ll add P and H since I absorbed the specs start-up cost. If you don’t have my email address, contact some friend at the blog who will get in touch with me to pass along size and address information.

Our privacy and security are important, so let’s be careful about posting personal information and photos.

This was supposed to be short, but it is apparent that I am more verbose in print than I am in person. (Other highlights of the gathering will follow.)

Liger (the toothless tiger): We were expecting you to drop in. Believe me, you would have had a gracious welcome because we are just folk who delight in the simple things in life… and have a sense of humor besides. After all, we don’t hide behind anonymity; we met Face2Face.

  • 43 onlineanalyst // Sep 4, 2007 at 12:20 pm

It’s also apparent that I should have proofread some sentences since I lost their direction in the midst of composing, but you get the drift.

BTW One of the highlights for me was a “walk on the wild side” with camojack when we tackled a several-mile hike on a (challenging!!!!) section of the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, ranked #3 Best Trail in the Nation by Trails.com. I have a turkey feather and a scabbed knee to commemorate the event. (Sore muscles? This out-of-shape Scrappler could not have climbed up or down the bunk ladder one more day without massive aspirin intake and intensive BenGay® massage.) Mrs. Beerme discarded my sassafrass root prize for later tea making in her quest for keeping the cabin spic and span. Yummy trail mix and jerky kept up my strength in this tortoise and the hare adventure. I was the tortoise, but I learned much from the master kahuna of the woods. Great day, great weather, and great adventure.

  • 45 Beerme // Sep 4, 2007 at 5:13 pm

Ok, I guess I’m the last to “check-in”!
Mrs. Beerme and I got home last night after stopping in Toledo to eat at the original Tony Packo’s (pretty good, that). Of course, I purchased the Tony Packo’s 75th anniversary Budweiser pint glass while there!

I just want to say thanks to everyone that showed up because it was really a lot of fun! I want to especially thank Onlineanalyst as she really made this event happen and was so knowledgeable of the area’s attractions that we had no problem keeping entertained all weekend long!

It was so nice to commune with so many smart and charming people. These folks are just as smart and funny in person as they are online!

We missed the rest of you and hope to see more folks show up at the next event.

Continental Congress fails to meet 11 of 18 goals

PARIS- The Continental congress in New York has not met 11 of its 18 political and security goals, according to a new independent report on America that challenges Ambassador Thomas Jeffersons’ assessment on the war.

The study, conducted by the Francais “Bureau d’Association de Gouvernement” (Government Association Office or GAO), was slightly more upbeat than initially planned. After receiving substantial resistance from the Federalist party, the GAO determined that four benchmarks — instead of two — had been partially met.

But GAO stuck with its original contention that only three goals out of the 18 had been achieved. The goals met include establishing joint security stations in Boston, ensuring minority rights in the Continental legislature and creating support committees for the Colonial coalition

“Overall key legislation has not been passed, Indian & Tory violence remains high, and it is unclear whether the American government will spend 120,000 Francs in reconstruction funds,” said Royal spokesman Henri D’Aggesi in prepared remarks for a Court hearing on Tuesday.

An advance copy of the 100-page report and D’Aggesi’s testimony was obtained by King Louis Press.

GAO’s findings paint a bleaker view of progress in America than offered by Ambassador Jefferson in July and comes at a critical time in the American debate. So far, Federalists have stuck by Jefferson and staved off aristocratic libertine propaganda ordering troops home. But many, who have grown uneasy about the unpopularity of the war, say they want to see substantial improvement in America by September.

Next week the top military commander in America, Gen. Lafeyette, and French ambassador to America, Msr D’Effeminite, are scheduled to brief the Sun kings grandson in the Anciene Regime.

“While the Colonial security plan was intended to reduce sectarian violence, measuring such violence may be difficult since the perpetrator’s intent is not clearly known,” GAO states in its report. “Other measures of violence, such as the number of enemy-initiated attacks, show that violence has remained high through July 1787.”

    Lawmakers split on report
Federalist leaders on Tuesday showed no signs of wavering in their support for Jefferson. “The GAO report really amounts to asking someone to kick the maypole ball 20 feet and criticizing them when they come up at the end of the 8 foot tether,” said fellow Federalist Alexander Hamilton.

Federalist leader John Jay told reporters he would like to ensure a long-term French presence in the Colonies to fight Iriquois leaugue natives and deter aggression from Florida.

Anti-Federalists said the GAO report showed that Louis’s decision to send more troops to Canada and the Colonies of America was failing because New York was not making the political progress needed to tamp down sectarian violence. They also complain that more than ten years after General Washington declared an end to major combat operations in America Over 17,000 regulars, militia and civilians had been killed and there is still no replacement for the weak Articles of Confederation. Some say there will never be a constitution much less an election.

“No matter what spin we may hear in the coming days, this independent assessment is a failing grade for a policy that simply isn’t working,” said Viscount Jean Francios d’Kerry. The report does not make any substantial policy recommendations, but says future administration reports “would be more useful to the Congress” if they provided more detailed information.

    Loius: America is making progress
Earlier this year, King Louis sent 3,000 extra troops to the Americas to enhance security in Quebec and New York areas. In a preliminary meeting of the group who plan in the future to be called the “Assembly of notables” they mandated the progress report released by July, Jefferson judged that New York had made satisfactory progress in eight of the 18 benchmarks. In five of those eight areas, GAO determined that America had either failed or made only partial progress.

The disparity is largely due to the stricter standard applied by GAO in preparing the report. GAO used a “thumbs up or thumbs down” approach in grading New York, whereas Jefferson’s assessment looked at whether America was achieving progress. For example, Jefferson said American politicians had made satisfactory progress in reviewing its proposed constitution, whereas GAO ruled they had failed because the process was not complete.

The State Department and Defense Department reviewed the report before its release. According to officials interviewed last week, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the study had not been released, the administration disputed GAO’s conclusion that America has failed to provide three trained and ready Colonial brigades to support American operations or to ensure that the security plan will not provide a safe haven for outlaws.

In the final report released Tuesday, GAO marked those two benchmarks as “partially met” and alludes to pushback it received from General Washington. The General went on to say that ” the gall of these French aristocrats and anti-federalists is astounding. Sitting at home in their palaces criticizing while we deal with a massive lawless frontier and native populace who have a 100 generations of warlike tribal sects and divide our naturally competitive colonies. We hope to have our first national elections by 1789 and I believe the liberal factions in France should look to their own borders or Louis the XVI and many of the librtines in that nation might find their heads on the political chopping block.

Regarding the deployment of the three American brigades, GAO found that of the 19 Colonial militia units supporting American operations only 5 had performed well. The remaining units experienced problems with lack of personnel or equipment.

    SGT USMC 1ea,

Belated Happy Birthday! Did you get the e-card?

    Best regards…

  • 53 SGT USMC 1ea // Sep 4, 2007 at 8:11 pm

Ok so comparing the weak spined King Louis to W is not really a good analogy. The real point is it took us well over ten years to form this wonderful government we call the USA. National elections as such were not held until 1789. We had massive security problems and limited ability to meet them despite foreign aid.

The ridiculousness of the GAO’s assement could be compared to France criticizing us back in the day. The sensitive aristocratic liberals who brought down Frances government in 1789 mostly died on the same guillotine due to boor jwa zeee discontentment with the smart sounding people.

Did I tell you we had Camojack sleeping under the kitchen table? Bodies everywhere. We had to put him there so we gals wouldn’t step on him during our mid-night walks.
    Comment by Ms RightWing, Ink — September 4, 2007 @ 7:38 am

Yes, those buggers apparently didn’t have a campsite for me that last night…and I appreciated being allowed to stay at the cabin.

I was looking for you after the gas stop, but not in the tunnel.

Now, of course, I don’t snore–heh! We won’t get into the bathroom breaks necessary for some people!)

Oh well, buying breakfast was no big deal; I enjoyed the company. All of it.

Too bad you didn’t get to make the sassafrass tea. I had some last on Memorial Day Weekend, at a shelter in North Jersey along the Appalachian Trail….

    Hawkeye,
Yes, belatedly due to lack of internet access at times. Sorry I did not get back to you. I spent a good deal of time cathing up at VAT http://victory.envy.nu/ but have yet to leave a word of encouragement on that wonderful site.. Sorry again (Appreciated the piece on per year Clinton era military deaths outpacing the last 5 years of WOT). I feel pulled a 1000 different directions at the moment since I am transitioning to a different Defense contracting job within Reagan’s prescient Star Wars BMDS. Thanks for all you do.

Okay, where is the incriminating photographic evidence of Scrapplefestival?

And I hope no one was playing footsies under the picnic table or on a trail or else we’ll all be discredited!

  • 59 Ms RightWing, Ink // Sep 4, 2007 at 10:46 pm

    Darthmeister

My pics are on film, unlike those modern face to facers who are digital, so my pics won’t be ready until tomorrow. That does not include the roll in my camera.

Since everyone but me wanted to remain secretively incognito, that is all you will see is self-portraits and pictures of waterfalls. I did shoot two photos of the floor by mistake which I may include. Oh yes, the face to face tree may be also be included at a premium price. We shall see.

I don’t think I will put them on Shelly’s Cafe though since nobody goes there for pie and coffee anymore, not even the delicious raspberry pie from the Scott Ott bakery. Though, like a good pack-rat, I gave him a loaf of bread in exchange for a boat load of pies.

Speaking of which, I am glad to report only two WFCCC’s made it home, plus one loaf of bread which was consumed by numerous non-productive people here at the Bunker

Liger is going to Scrapplefestival next year? Wait, I thought the Bush/Cheney junta was going to soon unveil its internment camps and begin filling them with his critics? Hmmmmm, Liger better have some good escape plans since the black helicopters are already on their way.

The Echelon program begun under Bill Clinton makes it child’s play to monitor all the Internet postings (which are public information anyway) and collect all the IP addresses of all those who have been speaking poopy about President Bush, VP Cheney and the war on terror.

Weren’t we told at the last vast rightwing conspiracy meeting that Supreme Commander Bush will issue a last minute executive order suspending all elections and will appoint himself Benign Dictator For Life UNTIL THE BU$HITLER/CHENEY/HALIBURTON/EXXON/ROVEHIMLER REGIME RULES THE ENTIRE WORLD … muwa … muwaha … muwahahahahahahahaha!

Resistance is futile … you will be assimilated! (Go ahead, Dr. Who, sue me and you’ll be put in an internment camp, too … you and your silly Tardis™.)

I never said that I wanted to remain “secretively incognito”; it would be a bit late for that at this juncture, anyway…

  • 62 Hawkeye // Sep 5, 2007 at 7:12 am

I’ll try to get some pics up soon over at “View From Above”. I’ve got some cropping and re-sizing to do first.

    SGT USMC 1ea #56,
I spent a good deal of time catching up at VAT http://victory.envy.nu/ but have yet to leave a word of encouragement on that wonderful site..

That’s OK. There’s no way to leave any words of encouragement even if you wanted to. It’s just a web site, not a blog. You can send me an e-mail with your comments and I’ll post ‘em on the “Mail” page. And thanks for the kind words.

I hope you understand my dry sense of humor by now. Of course I will post your picture sleeping (passed out?) under the kitchen table :-)

You can paste my picture. Of that I have no problem, just crop about 75 pounds off

  • 66 Effeminem // Sep 5, 2007 at 7:56 am

Ah, snap, I almost wish I were 30 years older so I could hang. As it is, I need to get to bed so I can roll over twice before I get up.

The showgirls won’t play footsies with themselves, ya know.

Welcome Home Face2Facers! I thought of you often over the wekend, with longing in my heart. Sounds like you had a great time!

Funny, when I think of camojack curled up under the table, I think of Jack, the trusty bulldog, who protected Laura, Mary, Ma and Pa as they slept.
    ;)

  • 68 camojack // Sep 5, 2007 at 8:29 am

I slept under the table to keep from being stept on.
