Open-Minded Bush to Announce Plan B Surge for Iraq

by Scott Ott · 86 Comments

(2007-07-13) — To demonstrate his open-minded attitude about the war in Iraq to an increasingly skeptical Congress, President George Bush will soon announce a “strategic redirection” that he will call the ‘Plan B Surge’.

Modeled after the success of the Plan B anti-pregnancy drug, which itself has surged in popularity since over-the-counter sales began last year, Mr. Bush’s ‘Plan B Surge’ calls for pulling troops out now, then waiting until al Qaeda has established a Muslim caliphate headquartered in Baghdad.

At that point, the Bush plan prescribes a massive introduction of U.S. troops to bring down the Qaeda government.

“The problem with fighting terrorists is that they have nothing big worth attacking,” said one unnamed White House official. “No palaces, fortresses or big troops concentrations. With the Plan B Surge we can let them do what they want early on, and then nip them in the bud just before they’re fully established.”

The White House source acknowledged that timing is everything with Plan B.

“If we wait too long,” he said, “We might have to abort the mission, and live with the consequences.”

At least GWB is coming up with plans. I don’t see any plans at all coming from the Dems, that is… unless “Run away! Run away!” is a plan. Sheesh!

Funny stuff as usual Scott

Hawkeye, I’ve heard four variations on the theme you mention:

    1) The What-Me-Worry Gambit: It’s not our responsibility to come up with a plan, THIS IS BUSH’S WAR (hope we lose) BUT WE SUPPORT THE TROOPS!!!

    2) The All-Was-Lost-From-The-Beginning-Plan:There can be no plan to win because we lost the minute we “rushed” into Iraq (after twelve freakin’ years of “rushing”)

    3) The John F’n Kerry Gambit: Brilliant Democrats have come up with a plan, but it’s a secret plan that we will only reveal when we gain back the Oval Office.

    4) The Cut-And-Run Plan: The only “plan” the Donks have actually been able to come up with over the last four years.

This post reminds me of the story about a man who attempted to catch a mouse. He was out of cheese so he put a picture of cheese in the trap. The next morning he checked the trap and found a picture of a mouse.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. We can purge and surge all day long, but until we send flowers to Iran we can expect the same outcome.(I’m talking about Daisies)

    Tomg ~ that’s a hoot.

You know, this could work because if we waited to bomb Al Quaida to their kingdom come, after they had set up shop, we wouldn’t be blamed for any collateral damage, since following our pullout, Al Quaida would have already done another “Pol Pot” and completely wiped out all of the ‘innocent Iraqis’. Anybody and everybody we took out would be the bad guys. Brilliant Scott.

c-a-ts, that’s a good point. If anyone other than the US kills civilians, it’s not a problem with the rest of the world. Of course, with this new plan the Dems will start whining about staying the course, much like they did following the last change in strategy.

    VETS FOR FREEDOM

Veterans, Vietnam combat veterans and Gulf War I veterans are starting to organize and speak out against the surrender insanity so recently demonstrated in Congress. In the meantime I wonder how much dirt the liberal media is going to try and dig up on this band of brothers?

  • 23 Hawkeye // Jul 13, 2007 at 1:28 pm

    Ms RW #22,
That’s why the Dems are so insistent on pulling the troops out NOW… First, they get to blame Bush for losing the war, and then they have the added benefit of not having to deal with the difficult situation there. How convenient, eh?

    Best regards…

  • 24 EXT // Jul 13, 2007 at 1:42 pm

All this when a single flight by a single B2 could end the whole thing.

No, that’s wrong. Need a second one for Iran.

OK, so all this when a single flight be each of two B2s could end the whole thing.

Oh yeah, bring the troops home first. But secretly. Then we could use them here to retake Washington (either DC or the state would be helpful) for The American People.

Democraps would be building gallows on the Capitol steps today if they could only decide on who gets the no-bid contract and how to divvy up the bribes. Not to worry…that would require a decision, of which they have proven themselves incapable.

Richard Lugar and John Warner have come up with some kinda “cut and run” plan for Iraq.

Don’t they know, we have to fight them there, so we don’t have to fight them there!

No, no make that; you can fool me once, but we can’t fight them here!

No, that’s not it either, make it if we don’t fight them there, you can’t fool me again!

No, dang it; if we don’t fight them there, I can’t fool you!

That’s it! So you better listen when “The War President”, son of “The Education/Ecology President”, speaks!

You know, listening to Dumbyah, kinda gives you an idea why GHWB was big on talking about the need for education.

  • 32 Sysiphus // Jul 13, 2007 at 4:46 pm

SGT Botta is listed by the Army as being in the IRR (Individual Ready Reserve). The IRR is set up so that you do not do “active” time (AD or Reserve/Guard). He has not been training or getting paid by the Army. When you enlist, you owe the Army 8 (usually concurrent) years. You may choose to serve these years in the Active ranks, the Guard, the Reserves, or a portion served between AD and active Reserve, with the rest being IRR (Inactive, but subject to being called up to active service). All of this was explained to him 6 years ago when he enlisted.

(More research):”In his own letters to the Army, Botta notes that he is attending school on the GI Bill” He wants the benefits of service without the responsibilities-there seems to be nothing new here, for him to refuse service would mean a loss of those benefits.
He was already granted a 287-day delay, which brings his report date to now. In my estimation, he owes me 287 days of service. To claim that the Army “sprung” this mobilization on him is absurd.

  • 41 Darthmeister // Jul 13, 2007 at 6:37 pm

Actually, what Warner and Lugar are proposing is a “reduced footprint” approach to the end game in Iraq … an approach that utterly failed the three years leading up to President Bush finding his U.S. Grant in General Petreaus.

Even the Bush Administration has draw-down proposals but they were contingent upon what commanders on the ground say about the security status in Iraq and not on what some pointy-headed Congresscritter who thinks he/she is an unconstitutional Commander-In-Chief.

    >ying@You, the only thing I’ve heard about a National Guardsman refusing a tour of duty in Iraq is one who serve one tour in Afghanistan and three tours in Iraq. I would have to say I don’t begrudge this citizen soldier voicing his displeasure in being rolled back into Iraq and nearly half the standing Army hasn’t serve one tour in either theater of operation. I personally would prefer he wouldn’t be forced to go for a fifth tour. He has certainly fulfilled his duty to his country … and then some.

BTW, Lying@You, whenever I use the term “band of brothers” I am only referring to the those who served under fire. It has nothing to do with me. I am merely recognizing the special comraderie these brave Americans have facing enemy fire … something you know nothing about since you’ve never served in combat, war hero.

  • 44 prettyold // Jul 13, 2007 at 8:45 pm

I guess it is time we got out of Iraq . But the only way to do it is arm both houses of Congress and put them in a perimeter around all American Troops. Then Congress ,oh heck ,let’s include all the bureaucrats,ALL of them, the Pentagon,CIA ,Surgeon General, all the backstabbers and liars, plus all their staffs who have been trying so hard to destroy Bush and the USA for the last 10 years. They can cover the retreat of the troops and Loyal Iraqi’s,as they are withdrawn . Then when they are safely out of harms way, we can set off the biggest nuclear bomb we have, No more Iraq,( put one in Iran ,too)so there is no oil for anyone and Washington politicians would be a thing of the past.Really cut down on Al qaeda, too.We can coordinatewith Israel ,so they can do a little house cleaning, too .

  • 45 prettyold // Jul 13, 2007 at 8:53 pm

Whew, I sure am glad we didn’t have any American soldiers go AWOL or desert during WW1,WW2,Korea, or Vietnam.

In the Fargo Forum there was an article several weeks ago about two brothers in Minnesota who were AWOL and not going back. It seems like the Army didn’t want to take the enegy or manpower to come and drag them back to the stockade. The article gave his name and where he lived. Hmm, I guess if you can’t cut the grade the Army just let you rot away in your own misery.

BTW, when you see someone expressing “somewhat distorted views”, you are free to jump right in & say so. A surprising number of the regulars here are willing to respond to actual arguments, as opposed to posts that are merely cheap shots, over-the-top snark and attempts to “play the dozens”. I should think you could be fairly skilled at argumentation - unlike some others, you seem to be capable of constructing actual coherent English sentences, and with correctly-spelled words even! Since it’s summertime now, they are full of holes and a lot of hot air. Then, again, they don’t have to rely on summertime for their hot air!

A good solid hit with a whiffle gernade would be effective, causing more damage than their resolutions, (which are in and of themselves - composed of a lot of holes and full of hot air)

I believe America would be better served if we simply dissolved both parties and got hardcore honest with “The Liberal Party” and “The Conservative Party” replacing them. That way McCain wouldn’t have so much trouble figuring out just which side of the aisle he’s on.

It looks like the Donk Party is getting religion. Precisely what you’d expect from a cynical, calculating party of hoity-toity reprobates trying to pander to yet another segment of the electorate. With the Donks their faux I-got-faith movement is from the top down and not from the bottom up. It certainly is interesting watching nominal Christians infected with BDS rushing to genuflect before their new-found religion of liberal socialism.

We’ll probably be seeing more of the left’s new holy handgrenades in 2008. The question now is only how many “Christians” will fall for this dog-and-pony show after the Demoncrats spent the last fifty years telling America how irrelevant God and Christianity is in their socialist utopia? Stupid is as stupid does.

They are also known to throw their heads back and laugh out loud while skipping around and glibly singing, “Tra-la. Tra-la,” and/or, “Nyah. Nyah.”

Occasionally, “Whee!” can be heard echoing from somewhere down the labyrinthine corridors.

Ms RightWing, the Tiger Woods of Scrappleface.

ALERT: Christian joke follows … I have to do it from memory because I heard it about twenty years ago.

Jesus and his disciples were playing skins one day on the links and were being watched by curious spectators who noticed them walk onto the course in their robes.

On the first par 2, 257 yard hole the disciples made their tee shots and each one landed their ball on the green. Jesus stepped to the tee, lofted the ball which arced gracefully toward the flag pole which it then hit a foot above the ground and immediately slid right into the hole for a hole-in-one! The disciples murmured among themselves and a few glared at Jesus’ back as they slowly strolled to the next hole.

On the par 3, 345 yard second hole each disciples drove their balls within easy pitching range of the green. Then Jesus stepped to the tee, took a mighty swing and the ball immediately began slicing right though it had the distance. As the golf ball was descending it then smacked into the lone pine tree that was on the right, ricocheted onto the green, rolled thirty feet and then fell into the hole for another hole-in-one!

This time the disciples were getting more animated, gesticulating to one another in apparent disgust. After about thirty seconds of whispered conversations as they collected drachmas to hand over to Jesus after he retrieved his golf ball from the hole, they began trudging toward the next hole which was a par 4, 472 yard behemoth with a water hazard on the left and a sand bunker bordering the green on the front right.

The disciples took their respective turns with Peter launching his ball nearly 356 yards after getting a lucky bounce. He was now within easy reach of the green with a good wedge shot. He turned and smirked at Jesus and was heard to mutter by the others, “Top that.”

Jesus pushed a tee into the ground and placed his golf ball on it. After waggling his club and surveying the fairway for about five seconds, he gave another Herculean swing, this time the ball hooked left heading straight for the water hazard and the disciples were already celebrating this impending golfing disaster. Suddenly an eagle swooped down as the ball tooks its first skip off the water, it grabbed the ball and began flying away. Suddenly the eagle, realizing the golf ball wasn’t a fish, dropped it from a height of about 100 feet where it fell within fifteen feet of the hole. The ball bounced three times and then fell right in for Jesus’ third hole-in-one in a row!

Peter hurled the driver he was holding and the rest of the disciples were engaged in agitated conversation among themselves as they pooled more drachmas to pay off Jesus for his skin. One spectator, after having edged forward enough by this time, pulled on the disciple John’s robe and asked, “Sir, who is this man? He’s a magnificent golfer or the luckiest man I’ve ever witnessed on a golf course.”

John snorted, “Naw, he’s not lucky. That’s Jesus of Nazareth. A great guy, but get him around a golf course and suddenly he thinks he’s Arnold Palmer.”

By a 39% to 20% margin, American adults believe that the three major broadcast networks deliver news with a bias in favor of liberals. A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that just 25% believe that ABC, CBS, and NBC deliver the news without any bias.

Imagine that! No, I’m talking about the 25% who actually believe that ABC, CBS, and NBC deliver the news without any bias. Media tools.

Way off track, but this has been bugging me for a long time.

What is it with John (The Breck Girl) Edwards and his constant complaining that the “whoa on terra” is simply a bumper sticker and not a strategy? Well… duh! Of course it’s a bumper sticker, just like his 2008 campaign slogan, idiot!

It really is a shame that someone who is running for President of the United States is so obtuse that he doesn’t realize that a bumper sticker represents a larger idea, that it’s shorthand, a sound bite if you will. I guess it has never occurred to Edwards that the stump speech that he gives at every campaign stop is basically an amplification (a more detailed explanation) of his bumper sticker/slogan.

Most people understand the shorthand when the President uses the expression “war on terror”. They understand that there is an evil religious extremism that wants to dominate the world and is willing to do anything to accomplish that goal including, but not limited to, suicide/homicide bombing, beheading, murdering civilians and members of their own religion. Most people understand that they are not going to go away and that if we don’t fight them now, we will have to fight them later, and at a greater cost in human lives and treasure, and more importantly, if we don’t fight them over there we will almost certainly end up fighting them over here.

I believe that most people understand the concept “perception is reality” and that if it is “perceived” that the U.S. is not willing to win in Iraq, then the “reality” will be a victory for our enemies just like Tet (a military disaster for North Vietnam) was forty years ago. Most people understand that anything less than victory in Iraq will result in genecide on a scale similar to what happened in South Vietnam and Cambodia when Democrats shut off aid to South Vietnam after the 1974 elections and the country soon fell. Is it even necessary to mention that it will also create a massive terrorist training ground in the heart of the Middle East? What do we do then?

Edwards pontificates about a lack of strategy on the part of the current administration. If my memory serves me correct, was not Edwards one of the Senators who admitted that he didn’t read the briefing papers before the vote to go to war and yet he voted with the majority and now claims that he was misled? Truth be told, his current opposition to the war has more to do with his wanting to pander to the far left, neocommunist whackjobs that control the Democrat base and continue the long held Democrat traditions of opposing America, cutting and running and general treasonous activity, than any supposed principle. It’s a Democrat thing, you and I wouldn’t understand.

So, what is his strategy? Would he fight the war “smarter” (does anybody even know what that means?) like John F’ing Kerry? Would he withdraw all troops as quickly as possible so that the “offense to Muslim sensibilities” of U.S. troops on Iraqi soil would be gone and then they wouldn’t have a reason to hate us? Would he apologize to Al Queda for America being a nominally Christian nation and the stench that must be in the nostrils of all true Wahabbi Muslims? Would he end our long history of support for Israel? Maybe promise to appoint that well known anti-semite Jimmy Carter as Secretary of State if the wins? Or is it to simply repeat over and over and over that Bu$hitler doesn’t have a strategy… just a bumper sticker?

SnakeDoctor #74: Here’s the short answer. It’s a quote from someone who regularly comments on another blog, a lady who uses the “handle” BabbaZee :

“Language matters. That is why it is being destroyed.”

Here’s a longer answer : Edwards wants you to accept his premises without him having to make the argument. First, the “war” on terror is, at best, a criminal matter, not a war. Second, it is an evil plot hatched by Bush/Rove for the purpose of achieving, and keeping, political power - for himself & for the Rethuglikkkan Party. A Truther conspiracy, writ large.

In the context of logic, abstractions are an aid to making an argument - shorthand, as you said. In the context of the politics of the 21st century, his “bumper sticker” slogan is his attempt to slip you a Mickey Finn.

By the way, I enjoyed your post. Well expressed.

According to his Warming Theory, this summer will be the hottest season we will have this year. It’s only the middle of July - just how much hotter can it get? Sheeesh!

    SnakeDoctor,

You nailed it, dude. Democrats are constantly projecting their foibles and inadequacies on their political enemies - us. Even more than the classic Marxist commie of the 20th Century, American liberals are constantly in the I-reject-reality-and-substitute-my-own mode, which is further fortified by the leftard media. They think to themselves, “Why of course the media and progressive “news” bloggers are objective because what they report in the way they report it matches up with my worldview nearly 98% of the time. Therefore I must be mainstream and well-informed!”

Well, DUH! Of course it “matches up” because liberals get 98% of what they believe from liberal news sources, sources which are thoroughly dominated by hard-core liberals themselves! The average liberal is little more than a media tool whether their “information” comes from the lamestream media or more currently, the radical leftist bloggers. On the other hand, conservatives are also immersed in the liberal news paradigm 12/7, but we also have alternative sources that we’re willing to look it and then make informed judgements with respect to what constitutes the real news and what is spin. The liberal is already predisposed against alternative news sources which may contradict what they hear on CBS/NBC/ABC/CNN/MSNBC/NYT/WaPo/KOS, ad nauseam. But admittedly, there are times when the liberal media gets it pretty much right but that seems to be getting rarer and rarer.

John Edwards sees the “whoa on terra” (I love that) as merely a bumpersticker BECAUSE EVERTHING LIBERALS STAND FOR IS A RESULT OF THEIR OWN BUMPERSTICKER MENTALITY!

Take a look at the southend of the northbound car of your average nutroots leftist. Often their entire political “reality” is plastered on their bumper like so much graffiti. You know, that “You Can’t Hug Children With Nuclear Arms” bumpsticker next to their Kerry/Edwards ‘04 or even a Mondale/Ferraro ‘84 sticker!

Sure you get the occasional Christian with the “My Boss is a Carpenter’s Son” bumpersticker, but at least in my view that has far more relevance and reality to hundreds of millions of people rather than some gooey utopian reference to “Visualize World Peace” (or as I like to say in retort, “Visualize Whirled Peas”).

Three issues that should now be seriously pushed in the broader public debate about the “whoa on terra”:

    1) Has “body-count journalism” corrupted the national news and its ability to fairly and accurately inform the American people about American successes against insurgents and terrorists?

    2) Has President Bush found his U.S. Grant in General David Petraeus?

    3) If liberals are truly a “reality-based community”, why are they incapable of considering the possibility that the American efforts in Iraq are a part of the broader war on terror?

  • 81 RedPepper // Jul 15, 2007 at 1:37 pm

Darthmeister: “ … liberals get 98% of what they believe from liberal news sources … ”

Darth, that’s so unfair! You’re forgetting the ideas emotions they get from entertainers !

Just to illustrate, here’s a quote.

“I believe in looking reality straight in the eye and denying it.” ~ Garrison Keillor

TERRORIST THREAT LEVELS IN EUROPE -

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist
threats and have raised their security level from “Miffed” to “Peeved”.
Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or
even “A Bit Cross”. Londoners have not been “A Bit Cross” since the
blitz began in 1940 and tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have
been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “A Bloody Nuisance”. The last
time the British issued “A Bloody Nuisance” warning level was during the
    great fire of 1666.

Also, the French government announced yesterday that it has raised its
terror alert level from “Run” to “Hide”. The only two higher levels in
France are “Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated bya
recent fire that destroyed France’s white flag factory, effectively
    paralyzing the country’s military capability.

It’s not only the English and French who are on a heightened level of
alert. Italy has increased the alert level from “Shout Loudly and
Excitedly” to “Elaborate Military Posturing.” Two more levels remain:
“Ineffective Combat Operations” and “Change Sides.”

The Germans also increased their alert state from “Disdainful Arrogance”
to “Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also have two higher
levels: “Invade a Neighbour” and “Lose”.

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only
threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready todeploy.
These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish
navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

    More hilarious garbage from AP:

RAMALLAH, West Bank - President Mahmoud Abbas consolidated his control of the West Bank on Saturday, installing an interim government of moderates to lead indefinitely.

First, are there truly “moderate” Palestinians for Abbas to tap? Or is a moderate now defined as a Palestinian who is merely willing to shoot someone instead of blowing himself up along with twenty other innocent civilians?

Second, what’s with the reference to an “interim government” that will “lead indefinitely”? Isn’t the whole point of an “interim government” a government which is temporary and short-lived?

Also, Bill Kristol may have figured out what the Democrats may be angling for with respect to an Iraqi withdrawal, aided and abetted by their accomplices in the liberal media who continue to refuse to publish the growing accomplishments of Iraqi and American military forces in rolling up al Qaeda and insurgent cells through Anbar and in other regional flashpoints:

The Defeatist Democrats have lots of support from the mainstream media, most of whom have simply given up on reporting the war or analyzing arguments about the war. … [R]un-of-the-mill foreign policy and White House reporters have little interest in what is actually happening in Iraq, or in a real consideration of the likely outcomes of different policy options. They’re not even reporting what’s happening in Washington. They’re simply committed to discrediting the war and humiliating the Bush administration.

… The establishment, like the media and the Democrats, wants to discredit and humiliate an administration that too often (though not often enough!) dared to think for itself, and to act without their permission. They’re out to destroy Bush, his ideas, and his supporters, no matter the consequences for the country.

Over the last few weeks, all of these estimable entities-the Democratic party in Congress, much of the media, and the foreign policy establishment-have joined together to try to panic the country, and the Bush administration, into giving up. The story of the past week-an important week-is this: They failed. Many around Bush wobbled. But Bush stood firm. Most Republicans on the Hill stood firm. And, so far as one can tell, the country as a whole pulled back a bit from the irresponsibility of cutting and running.
