Free Camp for Kids of Military Parents Deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2007

by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace · 33 Comments · · Print This Story Print This Story

THIS IS NOT SATIRE.
Faithful ScrappleFace readers know that editor Scott Ott is also director of a Christian children’s camp called Victory Valley Camp, in Zionsville, Pennsylvania.

As an expression of gratitude for the sacrifice of our troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, Victory Valley Camp is offering a free week of day camp (ages 5-to-11) or overnight camp (ages 8-to-13) for their children during summer 2007.

This offer applies to families of troops deployed to either of these theaters of operations during the 2007 calendar year. A week of Valley Day Camp normally costs $135. A week of overnight Camp or Outpost costs $335. For these families, we will charge nothing.

We’re doing this as an act of honor and love for these families who have given so much of themselves that the rest of us might live in a nation where we’re free to worship the Lord.

We appreciate that a week of camp for these children will not only provide a joyful time of God’s word in God’s creation, but it also offers a much-needed week of respite for the stateside spouse.

For more information, click the flag of the United States of America at VictoryValleyCamp.org

May the Lord bless the families and the troops who hold freedom more dear than life. We count it all joy, and a privilege to serve you.

Victory Valley Camp has no fund set aside for this effort. We’re doing it because it seems like the right thing to do. People who wish to help, may contribute online or by mail. To learn more, click here. But whether folks give or not, the offer stands.

All right! Thank you Scott for all you and the camp offers to our youth. I can’t contribute money, but I sure will keep the camp in my prayers

  • 2 Darthmeister // Jun 19, 2007 at 10:44 pm

Scott, I hope what I sent will pay for most of one soldier’s child at your Day Camp. Godspeed, sir!

And our collective Scrapple prayers are with you that God will mightily bless the great work you are engaged in in ministering to those family members of those who are making such great sacrifices on the frontiers of freedom in the service of this great nation.

    Thanks for doing this.

Kicking in a bit to help the kids.

Methinks I ought to contribute to this worthy cause…

  • 5 camojack // Jun 20, 2007 at 6:22 am

…so I did. Is it tax deductible?

God’s Blessings be upon you Sir Scott and your ministry! What a wonderful idea.

    Best regards…

Good to know…and the knowing might well encourage more folks to become contributors, too.

God Bless Scott Ott! and the lucky kids, too!

  • 9 diamond jim // Jun 20, 2007 at 8:18 am

This is great…I am happy to contribute.

Although I don’t consider this a sacrifice in the least bit, but a duty of gratitude and concern, it is a fact that, to date , the American people have not been asked to sacrifice anything…..except to keep shopping, keep traveling , pay more gasoline taxes and keep quite about anything Muslim.

God bless our brave troops and their families!

  • 10 diamond jim // Jun 20, 2007 at 8:20 am

….oops …”quite” should have been “quiet” in last post…

  • 11 Libby Gone // Jun 20, 2007 at 8:20 am

    Great work Scott,sir!

  • 12 Fred Sinclair // Jun 20, 2007 at 9:51 am

Scott: This sure does beat the socks off of helping the liberals that run Disney further promote their Sodomite agenda.

Yet, there are people who who actually admit to dropping big bucks at Disneyland and Disneyworld every year, yet turn their nose up at the thought of helping support VVC.

While Disney will never see a cent of my money, I consider it a priviledge to be able to give what I can to both SF & VVC.

btw - I’m still hoping for a VVC PayPal button. (?)

    Off Topic:

Michael Bloomberg finally figured out he isn’t a Republican … what a clueless twit.

He’ll probably claim he’s a “Goldwater Republican” and then run as an independent. He and Ralph Nader will split the left-wing loonie vote - good!

  • 14 Shelly // Jun 20, 2007 at 11:44 am

Mr. Ott, you’re outstanding wit has brought me the kind of laughter that leads to tears on numerous occasions. I haven’t been around for a little while, but am pleased to say that stopping by today has simply brought the tears, the ones that accompany the joy and admiration felt for all like you who generously share God’s love with others, especially children, and who simultaneously love this great nation and its defenders. You are a great blessing to many, kind sir.

Can I contribute through the PayPal tip jar, or is there a special link somewhere in the clutter abounding on this site?

I’m currently paying a detective’s overtime for his commutes to The Possum Den. Much was made of John Wayne’s 100th birthday; my dad was approximately the same age. A War II veteran of the Greatest Generation, he might not have made the magic 100, but he was entitled to what The Bible calls “the fullness of his days.” He was denied that, and we will find the serial killer who intervened in so many lives.

The only thing greater than the soldiers who risk all for our security are their children. Where do I go to pony up some cash for this worthy cause?

Good goin’, Great Scott. A cyber-pat on the back, and again, where do I go to help with expenses?

  • 16 Possumtrot // Jun 21, 2007 at 5:33 am

I tried posting twice, and both got lost in the sauce. Maybe the MS Word cut-‘n-paste will work.

Where do I go to help defray expenses for those kids? Their parents are risking all to keep us secure. Will the PayPal tip jar suffice, or is there an obscured link on this cluttered site?

I’m paying a detective’s overtime to bring files on a commute and reopen a 23-year-old cold case murder. However, the children of these brave warriors are a valuable resource, and their families deserve all the support I can offer.

Good goin’ Great Scott. A cyber-pat on the back. Where do I go to help?

  • 17 Possumtrot // Jun 21, 2007 at 5:40 am

Oh, good. All of a sudden everything posts.

Never mind. People with sleep disorders should never venture online before sunrise.

At the risk of being repetitous, where do I go to contribute?

    (Did I spell repetitous correctly?)

[Editor's Note: You may follow the links to the camp website in the story above, or click this one then click the U.S. flag or the 'Donate' link in the left margin. Thank you. And thanks to those who have already given.]

“repetitious” is somewhat closer but you’re close enough for government work, besides “typo” would cover it and we all have our share of typos…..

DRUDGE REPORT has a piece today on “Global Cooling” seems that the “Manmade” Global Warming was all a bunch of hooey!

(Satire mode on) “Manmade Global Warming Alarmist” are all ga-ga with happiness, now that their hero Heirborn Ranger not only proved that they have been right all along but singlehandedly reversed the trend and has saved the planet and all of mankind from becoming a glowing ember in space.

Based on their sound scientific advice and acting on his own inititative, Heirborn cut his cigarette smoking down to only a single pack a day and he, from his own meager SS cheque, purchased and installed two little “eco-friendly light bulbs in his apartment!”

The results were imediate. The melting glaciers at both poles have begun reforming, The polar bears and penguins are safely out of danger but unfortunately his effect has proven to be too drastic. Now, scientific research proves that Heirborn had instituted an over correction and the planet is now in danger of becoming an ice-ball in space with the rapidly forming glaciers predicted to cover the entire planet to a depth of a half mile within the next twenty years.

Efforts are being made, imploring Heirborn to increase his cigarette consumption to a pack and a half a day, thus preventing the formation of said half mile glaciers. He has responded, saying, and I quote, “I’ll take your suggestion under advisement and get back to you.” (Satire mode off)

  • 21 Darthmeister // Jun 21, 2007 at 9:19 am

Fred, I replaced three standard incandescent 75W bulbs with those PC anti-global warming florescent light bulbs (which are supposed to last five years) and the first one burnt out after three months! Now I have a mercury disposal hazard to deal with. Seriously.

I’m thinking about capturing a thousand lightning bugs and putting them in a bottle instead but I can see getting a knock on the door from the folks at PETA.

  • 22 camojack // Jun 21, 2007 at 9:33 am

Another thing about those compact flourescent bulbs is that most of them are made in China…in facilities that contribute copious amounts of pollution to the atmosphere.

Of course, under the much-vaunted Kyoto Treaty, China gets a free pass to pollute as much as they want to as a “developing” economy.

Too much; they have a 233 BILLION dollar trade deficit with the U.S. alone, but they’re a “developing” economy.

I certainly hope that they don’t get any more developed…

  • 23 GnuCarSmell // Jun 21, 2007 at 10:18 am

I wanted to do my part to stop mercury pollution, so I traded it in for a ford.

I feel bad for what I said. The first of the month I will dip into the coffers and find a little something. I can sacrifice a bag of chips or a Mickey Dee’s. right?

Remember the widow’s mite, Ms RightWing. Anything you can contribute on a fixed income you have will be far more than any of the rest of us “youngsters” can contribute out of our relative plenty … and over the years many of us really do have plenty of relatives.

Sometimes people have to say something twice before I get it.

  • 28 Darthmeister // Jun 21, 2007 at 9:35 pm

That was an echo. I thought I lost the first post (the computer glitched and the post didn’t appear) and so I retyped it from memory. Got pretty close … with some improvements I see. Not bad for a former Mercury driver (Sable), eh?

Mercury? That reminds me … When I was a teenager I goofed around with a friend whose family owned a former tree nursery on 80 acres. I always wondered why in some areas of the property the trees (which were about sixty foot tall by them) seem to be in neat rows, I wondered, that is, until he told me the history of the property one day. Anyway, in the summer we’d be hunting with 16 ga and .22 rimfire probably eight hours a day five days a week. If nothing else it was a nice walk back to a fishing “pond” and a swimming hole. Frank was kind of a quirky country fella, a budding anarchist if there ever was one, but I remember arriving at his place one morning and there he was rolling around some “quicksilver” in the palm of his hand. I thought it was pretty cool and asked him if he got it out of a thermometer or something. He showed me a bottle that had to have been holding about a cup’s worth of mercury. He had found it in a dilapitated garage that also held an old 1949 Buick something or other car.

Luckily I wasn’t tempted to play with the stuff since I was more intent on getting started on our hunting expedition for the day. It was only later in a 9th grade chemistry class I found out mercury can pass into the bloodstream through the skin and was some really nasty stuff. Since finding out about mercury poisoning I always wondered if that’s why Frank was moody and always struggled with his school work or if that was because he was more of a loner who didn’t care two flips about school. No telling how much he may have played with the stuff, but he’s still alive and appeared healthy when I last saw him about five years ago.

Well, just getting on today as I have been in apples and painting all day. Scott, this is a wonderful gesture. You are such a neat person. And ain’t Paypal great too??? :-)

How’s tricks guys? It is still raining here. Can you believe it? It was only supposed to be 30% chance and the temps were to be in the mid 90’s. Instead, it has been overcast with heavy showers and cool air. Not complaining except for the unending rain. What’s this make it now? Four solid weeks? I’m starting to mildew. This is really wierd for Oklahoma. Must be the Global Warming Cooling.

Fever and leeches, the Turk, the Arab and the Spaniard will soon have pennies on their eyes. (Emerson; Lake and Palmer: “Pirates”)

Copper coins were used in Ye Olde Days to shut the eyes of the dead.

The “pirates” are givin’ it up for the kids on our fixed incomes. Get off the dime and do likewise!

There are lots of free camps for the kids in Iraq and Afghanistan. These camps recommend effective programs for the growth of teenagers. Training camps are fine structured and most disciplined training centers. Centers appoint professional trainers, instructors and counselors for the successful training the youths. Teenagers learn lots of new healthy skills, habits and interests in the training camps. Military camps provide specialized training classes for boys and girls both.
