Libby Claims He Can’t Recall What He Didn’t Do

(2007-02-02) — The prosecution in the perjury trial of I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, the former vice presidential chief of staff, today continued to cast doubt on Mr. Libby’s claim that he “misremembered” details about events that led up to his failure to break a law against leaking a CIA agent’s name to reporters.

The prosecution called an FBI agent to the stand yesterday to testify that Mr. Libby, who is not charged with illegally revealing the name of CIA operative Valerie Plame, “feigned surprise” during an FBI interview when reminded of conversations he had with reporters during which he broke no laws.

In a dramatic moment, the prosecutor turned from the FBI agent to the jury and said, “Ladies and Gentlemen, if you were given the amazing privilege of speaking to a real journalist from a famous publication or TV network, wouldn’t you remember every detail, every word, every gesture, every pregnant pause? Of course you would. That brush with greatness would be seared in your memory — a treasured story you would pass on to your children and your children’s children. And yet, Mr. Libby wants us to believe he can’t recall what he said to reporters about deeds for which he now appears before you unindicted.”

umm, duh, well, uh, gee, ummm, now tell me one more time, just what did I do?

Gotta run, somebody is dragging me off to Pittsburgh. Am I suppose to be excited?? Well it is better than the Dirty Old Factory Town.

  • 4 Darthmeister // Feb 2, 2007 at 8:28 am

And when pressed, it sounds like the journalists involved can’t remember either.

  • 5 Maggie // Feb 2, 2007 at 8:30 am

    Good Morning Scrapplers.
When will Ms.Clinton go on trial for what she can’t recall? When will Berger serve time for not remembering he put documents in his pants and socks? When will Congressman Bacca remember that he called Congresswoman Chavez a vulgar name…….and on and on and on and on………….

  • 6 Darthmeister // Feb 2, 2007 at 8:30 am

You’re right, Scott, such brush with journalistic greatness should be seared, seared, seared in ones mind.

  • 7 azredneck // Feb 2, 2007 at 8:34 am

Clearest description of the problem yet!!!

  • 8 Darthmeister // Feb 2, 2007 at 8:39 am

I also appreciate how Andrea Mitchell is said to be stepping back from her original claim (which we republished here at Scrappleface years ago) that the identity of Joe “The Liar” Wilson’s wife was well known to the journalists working the intelligence beat.

I guess what Libby is afflicted with has also infected journalists who appear to have the advantage of “gotten their stories straight” over the last two years. Wouldn’t want to confuse the judge and jury, now would they?

In any case it appears there was no White House conspiracy to “out” Valerie Plame in order to shut Joe Wilson up but rather the White House was more concern in setting the record straight as to who actually sent Wilson in the first place (Valerie Plame was involved despite Wilson’s and her denials and yet they say Cheney sent him which he didn’t) and what a shoddy job Wilson did in Niger as testified to in a Senate Select Committee on Intelligence report. I guess sitting down and drinking tea with Nigerian pubahs constitutes a real investigation. The Britts still stand by their original report that Saddam’s agents were inquiring into Niger yellowcake. Oh well.

I had an opinion about this issue, at one time … at least, I think I did …

  • 10 onlineanalyst // Feb 2, 2007 at 9:05 am

I guess that Armitage, Wilson, Plame, and even Fitzgerald himself get a “pass” on clarifying the truth and being exposed as accessories after the fact in this kangaroo court of phony outrage. The Nifonging of Libby by Fitzgerald has cost incredible amounts of time and money better directed toward tackling real issues of security breeches, not some phantoms of the Wilsons’ egos.

Most excellent, Sir Scott. Good summary of the situation.

General Casey Refutes Dire Iraq Predictions

Of course the liberal DimDonks and a good number of spineless Republicans will ignore this general and others who won’t toe the line about our “defeat” in Iraq. This demonstrates the almost overwhelming power of the lamestream media narrative which is trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory for the Democrats. Shades of Walter Cronkite!

Reminds me of Martha Stewart’s case. Didn’t do the crime but is tried for lying during the investigation.

Aaawwwww, the poor guy. He’s over 40 and is afflicted with that horrible malady, CRS Disease (Can’t Remember Stuff). Much of the population has it; me too. Afflicted! I tells ya! Afflicted!

  • 18 mig // Feb 2, 2007 at 9:53 am

What was your first thought this morning? What? You can’t remember?! ARe you telling me that this morning when your feet hit the floor as you were getting out of bed, a monumental occassion for the rest of us, you don’t remember any of it?

  • 19 mig // Feb 2, 2007 at 9:56 am

I forgot my purse in the shopping cart this morning. I sat in the drivers seat wondering if I actually put the darn thing in the car when I was loading the groceries. I sat there trying to remember if I forgot.

  • 20 mig // Feb 2, 2007 at 9:58 am

One time I was wondering why I had all this free time and it turnned out that I really didn’t have any free time, I just forgot to pick my kids up from school. Now getting my kids from school is pretty monumental. I ‘ve been doing it for 11 1/2 years. It’s not something a person just forgets. And I will never forget forgetting.

Travel Prayers going out to Ms. Rightwing and to Camojack! Be safe. Have fun and don’t forget that you are traveling. Scenery might look different but it is supposed to. Remember so you won’t forget.

  • 22 mig // Feb 2, 2007 at 10:03 am

Oops, I almost forgot to remember that I have to do meals on wheels at 10. Adios! I forget what that means. I think it means that I won’t forget to remember that I can be forgetful. Or that I don’t mind talking to myself.

  • 23 seneuba // Feb 2, 2007 at 10:10 am

I was going to post something but I forgot was I was going to write.

Oh well, you know what they say in the NBA:

    “No autopsy; no foul.”

  • 24 seneuba // Feb 2, 2007 at 10:13 am

    Global warming??? It’s -12
    (without the windchill this morning)

The weather genius say it will be -25 by Sunday morning…

  • 25 MargeinMI // Feb 2, 2007 at 10:13 am

“I sat there trying to remember if I forgot.” Verrrry funnnny. Lost my cell phone while talking on it. Is that bad?

  • 26 MargeinMI // Feb 2, 2007 at 10:17 am

Bundle up seneuba! If I remember, it’s called a Saskatchuan Screamer.

Red Pepper, I don’t pay any attention to that Punk Phil. He’s a phool, always has been. Heck, winter didn’t even START here til a couple of weeks ago!

  • 27 upnorthlurkin // Feb 2, 2007 at 10:32 am

Senuba, I seem to remember we’re neighbors…you must be farther north tho….it’s +2° here! Heading for the same bone chilling temps you mentioned tho…..ah well, it took til the first of February for winter to really hit hard here….that shortens the season considerably!! Yipoee! Marge, we call them Alberta Clippers up and over here! ;-)

  • 28 seneuba // Feb 2, 2007 at 10:43 am

This makes for very good ice fishing - especially on Lake of the Woods…the walleyes are a blast to catch while sitting in a warm ice house sipping on hot coffee.

Global Warming? PHOOEY! I really don’t listen to the MSM news, but someone in the office mentioned that AlGore was nominated for the Nobel PEace Prize….Are you kidding me? I didn’t know that had a “crazy” category.

  • 29 Darthmeister // Feb 2, 2007 at 10:55 am

Maybe the journalists testifying in this case (Miller, Cooper, Russert et al) are having “false but accurate” remembrances. I guess only their hairdressers know for sure.

  • 30 gafisher // Feb 2, 2007 at 11:06 am

Senuba #28: Did you hear who else was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize? I wonder how THAT voting will turn out . . .

  • 31 Big Java // Feb 2, 2007 at 11:32 am

OK, folks, ya’ll just don’t get it.
First, Republicans must remember everything we have ever said or done. (Of course, I don’t even remember what I had for breakfast this AM).
Second, this is global warming. Because of the increase in temperature, there is a decrease in temperature and the snow falls because the increase in temperature causes the water to evaporate, rise and come back as snow. See…(Down here we call this weather a pipe buster.)

  • 32 upnorthlurkin // Feb 2, 2007 at 11:44 am

Dumb question but is it exceptionally (and/or abnormally) warm anywhere in the country right now?

  • 33 upnorthlurkin // Feb 2, 2007 at 11:45 am

    Rats! Wrong thread!

    Dorkemoniker,

    Re: Number 8

“I also appreciate how Andrea Mitchell is said to be stepping back from her original claim (which we republished here at Scrappleface years ago) that the identity of Joe “The Liar” Wilson’s wife was well known to the journalists working the intelligence beat.”

For those of us who missed it, would you mind telling the world where Andrea Mitchell made “her original claim”?

It wasn’t the Fox Noise Channel, was it? Was it maybe Hannity, or O’Reilly? Everthink is gonna be just be thrilled!

America needs to know! You ask: “How do I know?”

    I’m Captain America, that’s how!

  • 35 GnuCarSmell // Feb 2, 2007 at 1:56 pm

Patrick Fitzgerald and Mike Nifong would make excellent cell mates. Heck, they might make some beautiful memories together. If they can just recall them on cross-examination…
