(2006-11-20) — Rep. Charles Rangel, D-NY, yesterday unveiled the Democrat plan for boosting the minimum wage, providing free healthcare to millions more Americans, increasing college attendance, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preventing future U.S. wars of aggression.
“Our plan is so simple and elegant that it can be stated in one word — draft,” said Rep. Rangel. “By implementing a military draft, we’ll provide a living wage and free healthcare to our new involuntary soldiers and their families, plus we’ll give them college money after their term of service.”
The New York Democrat, who has proposed a draft several times before, said taking many of the 18-to-26 year-olds off the nation’s highways will decrease the number of automobile fatalities and drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The most crucial element of the Draft America Plan, he said, is creation of a huge military force comprised of less-motivated troops in case the president must decide whether to go to war with North Korea or Iran, or to expand the global war on terror in other lands.
“Right now, it’s the skill and passion of our all-volunteer force that gives George Bush the arrogance to challenge our enemies on their soil,” Rep. Rangel said. “With a military full of reluctant conscripts, Bush won’t be so cocky. We’ll be safer because, as we all know, when American troops stay home fewer terrorists are created.”

Gosh, why didn’t somebody think of that years ago? Too bad someone of Charlie Rangel’s genius wasn’t prresident back in 1973 when the decision was made to end the draft! To think, all this time, the answer to all our problems was so simple. Oh well, as the old saying goes, simple answers for simple people.

GREAT IDEA!!! Only, so that no one is left out - draft everyone 11 years of age and older.
The Seniors, assigned to the knitting Brigade could knit the wool caps, “Wooly Pully” sweaters and socks for the rest of the Army.
The teenagers could run all of the computers.
Some of the better qualified Grandmas & Gramps could be assigned to the Cooks and Bakers Brigade.
All children under 11 could be assigned to Democrat’s Re-education School Brigade, (to ensure proper brainwashing”.
Since this has to be a 100% draft; Rep. Charles Rangel, D-NY could lead and show the way by becoming “Conscript #1″, he could be assigned to the Mops and Buckets Brigade, comprised of the rest of the Congress, Media & Movie/TV personalities.

Well! Rangel’s plan should certainly put a chill up the spine of the pacifists. Or is he trying to build momentum for the protesters?
Take a look at this assessment of another Leftie about why the Dems won at the midterms. Hayes, writing at The Nation, attributes economic populism as the message that resonated with voters. Somehow the beauty of free-market economy is lost on the Left. (It’s always wise to learn what the opposition’s viewpoint is in order to refute its illogic.)

Draft? Why do we need a draft now, I thought we were redeploying the troops to Texas. I thought we were supporting the military by bringing them home. Do we need to the draft to bring all the equipment home? Geesh, that will put my husband out of work. Then I’ll be on the dole too. huh. Okay then.

I don’t think there should be a draft, either. That is, as in the old days of the lottery-style draft, where some went and some didn’t and there were loop-holes which could be purchased for those who could afford them. And especially when the reason that Rangle wants it reinstated is as some bizarre form of punishment for those with whom he disagrees.
As I said in the previous thread: I think military service should be compulsory for all US citizens. I think the Israelis have to do two years service before the age of 25 (or something like that). I believe this country would benefit immensely from such a program.

I think Rangle is daft about the draft. He’s engaged in nothing less than political grandstanding and is another prime example of liberal cynicism at its worst.
From a high school varsity baseball team I helped coached in 2003, we’ve had five of our players volunteer to serve their country during this time of great need. My son will soon follow once he gets his degree from the U of I.
These aren’t poor, inner city kids but rather the cream of the crop of a private prep school. Our coaching staff watched silly teenagers become young men in overcoming adversity on the playing field, finish the season with one of the best records the school had seen against public schools with ten times the students, and now serving their country with distinciton.
One has already served a tour of duty in Iraq and returned, three others are presently serving in the sandbox and the last one will graduate this year and transition from the Naval ROTC to naval flying school.
This is the kind of Americans that an all volunteer force is producing, people of action. And to a man they despise the do-nothing anti-war crowd who are making their jobs more difficult by constantly denigrating their mission before the enemies of this country (their words, not mine).

Darthmeister, thanks for the positive info on our volunteer armed forces. I just wonder what in the world Rangle has to gain from this, because the man never does anything that doesn’t benefit him personally. I feel like Deja Vu all over again. I remember the draft of my teenage years and how I voted for Nixon as a Democrat because he promised to get rid of it. Here is a great link to an explanation of the history.
A very interesting exerpt is as follows: “Once in office in 1969, Nixon found he had made a campaign promise opposed by much of the top military brass, many of his supporters in Congress and his two top military-oriented appointees, national security advisor, Henry Kissinger, and defense secretary, Mel Laird. A very vocal volunteer force supporter was a young congressman from Illinois, Don Rumsfeld, who introduced legislation supporting the proposal; and while Senate and House hearings were held on his bill, nothing happened. Rumsfeld later joined the Nixon staff.”

Here’s a thought! A previous poster mentioned that there would have to be Something to benefit Chucky. The idea behind all this might be to scare the general public into demanding a quicker pullout/runaway etc from Iraq so the draft wouldn’t be needed…
