Pelosi Backs Murtha, Cites Ethics Experience

by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace · 87 Comments · · Print This Story Print This Story

(2006-11-14) — House Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi today defended her decision to back Rep. Jack Murtha, D-PA, as the next House Majority Leader, citing his extensive ethics experience as crucial to her efforts to “clean up the House.”

“Jack Murtha knows corruption inside and out,” said Rep. Pelosi, D-CA. “If we’re going to purge misconduct from our midst, we need someone intimately familiar with it.”

She distributed to reporters a history of Rep. Murtha’s “work involving ethics,” that she called “a chronicle of accomplishment dating back to the Abscam bribery sting days — making him ideally suited for leadership in the Democrat party.”

“Jack Murtha has been at the forefront of the corruption debate for almost three decades,” she said. “We can’t afford to elect a leader who’s naive in these matters. We need a man who knows the cost of buying votes with earmark porkbarrel projects, a man for whom political nepotism is not just a textbook case study, a man who has the courage to look at a $50,000 bribe and say ‘I’m not interested…at this point’, and one who has demonstrated the kind of cooperative skills it takes to walk away from an FBI probe a free man.”

“In brief,” Rep. Pelosi said, “two words sum up Jack Murtha’s qualifications to lead the scouring of the House: unindicted co-conspirator.”

    JL3,

I’m surprised at you. Don’t you know that corruption only exists in the Republican party? Why, just ask Nancy Pelosi or Katie Couric or Gunga Dan Rather.
Besides it was almost 30 years ago.

Look, if Alcee Hastings is fit to be head of the Intelligence Committee (is that an oxymoron or what, especially with a Democrat in charge?) and he was impeached as a judge, surely Jack Murtha is fit to be Majority leader. The guy was never forced to resign, right? That makes him as pure as the wind driven snow. Besides you can never criticize a veteran, especially a Nam veteran. Funny how that didn’t work out for Duke Cunningham. I guess he was in the wrong party.

Tom Delay must be spinning in his grave. Oh wait, he’s not dead yet, the moonbats just wish he was.

Golly it sure is great to know that you can change the leadership in the House, but nothing else changes. We sheep do like consistancy, if nothing else.

Just think, if Murtha does become Majority leader and Republicans try even half what the Dems actually did against Newt, Delay and others too numerous to mention, the MSM will go nuts with cries of “politics of personal destruction” and will wail about the lack of civility. It’ll be great

    Regards,

PS Another great one Scott. As usual you nailed it.

  • 8 onlineanalyst // Nov 14, 2006 at 7:59 am

When even the WaPo and fellow-traveling Dems question Pelosi’s judgment in supporting Murtha, the depth of the “culture of corruption” charge by the self-righteous Donk Party must really raise some eyebrows- even higher than Nanny’s lifted ones. As an equal-opportunity label, wheeling and dealing trip over each other across the aisle.

Byron York makes some observations that summarize Murtha’s rap sheet. (Do you think that Snoop Dog could come up with some lyrics for “Jack,” who looks like the sorriest bloodhound in the kennel.

Will he be wearing his “pink” power tie in his congratulatory photo with Code Pink? Snarky commenters (like me) want to know.

From last nights post. I think this is a really good threat to the New York democrats and East Coast libs

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a moderate Republican best known for his stewardship of the city after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, has taken the first step in a 2008 presidential bid, GOP officials said Monday.

The former mayor filed papers to create the Rudy Giuliani Presidential Exploratory Committee Inc., establishing a panel that would allow him to raise money for a White House run and travel the country.

Will Murtha quit looking over his shoulder for the next two years? I think not.

Camojack, thank you for the link to Massie’s piece. I was not familiar with him either, but boy did I enjoy that shot in the arm. As Ms Rightwing, Ink and I were discussing, how could we forget those Carter years? We bought a farm while Carter was in office, and being the good Democrat that I was, didn’t even realize what the interest rate was because the government gave us a special rate of 6%. I was too dumb to understand why everyone was shocked that we could afford a farm at such a young age (22 and 21). We couldn’t, but the government enabled us to think we could. A few years later, at the beginning of the Savings and Loan debacle, we lost the farm and got out by the skin of our teeth, saved only by the rampant inflation of the day. Sigh. Those were the days. :-)

John Murtha is double innoculated, he’s a Marine AND a Demoncritter and in the Donk Party that makes you virtually bullet-proof. The media won’t pursue this story of Democratic corruption, especially Murtha’s, unless they start feeling the heat from the general public wanting to know more. But it would have to be virtually a firestorm of public concern before that would happen but frankly most Americans simply don’t care.

Just for the fun of it I’m going to go out on the limb and say that Harry Reid won’t be running the Senate. He’ll be demoted to Majority leader and some other rising star will take his place. The Republicans need to make an issue of Harry’s dirty real estate deals (there are more than one). Within the next six months start a Democrat culture of corruption meme since there is plenty of ammunition for such a claim. Put it on simmer and watch it boil the next two years given Pelosi’s early willingness to appoint highly-questionable Donks to real positions of power.

Favorite quote on the outgoing Republican leadership. [ in your best southern cop voice ]

“What we have here is a failure to communicate.”

  • 24 Beerme // Nov 14, 2006 at 10:27 am

As the Abscam deals are pretty old, the more appropriate attack on Murtha is his earmark dealing business he runs on the side while in the House. He is the epitome of the corrupt, “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” attitude in politics. He literally sets up shop doing deals in his little corner of the chamber, where he has been a very influential power broker for many years.

My friends, that’s business as usual in our government. When are we all going to say enough is enough? I still have hope because there are a few good elected officials who want to do the right thing. I hope they start to multiply…

Ms Right #23. Wasn’t that Cool Hand Luke’s last words?

  • 29 JamesonLewis3rd // Nov 14, 2006 at 11:25 am

The quote is attributed to “Captain, Road Prison 36,” who was played by Strother Martin.

    Here is the entire quote:

“What we’ve got here is… failure to communicate. Some men you just can’t reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it… well, he gets it. I don’t like it any more than you men.”

The captain isn’t the only one who utters the words. Later in the movie, the main character, Luke (Paul Newman), still cocky despite being cornered by prison guards, openly mocks the Captain with the famous line.

Luke: I can eat fifty eggs.
Dragline: Nobody can eat fifty eggs.
Society Red: You just said he could eat anything.
Dragline: Did you ever eat fifty eggs?
Luke: Nobody ever eat fifty eggs.
Prisoner: Hey, Babalugats. We got a bet here.
Dragline: My boy says he can eat fifty eggs, he can eat fifty eggs.
Loudmouth Steve: Yeah, but in how long?
    Luke: A hour.
Society Red: Well, I believe I’ll take part of that wager.

I have seen the enemy andthe media are the enemy.

More documented lamestream media lies and photo manipulation. I can’t believe these photo-editor/journalists are recycling a long discredited photo. I believe the latest weapon of the lamestream media, the “media narrative”, could end up being one of the most dangerous things in the future which threaten American liberties and our political system.

Little doubt when you have the MSM acting in the fine tradition of Goebbels for what they believe to be “the good of the country”, Americans who rarely avail themselves of alternate news sources will always have a jaundiced view of reality.

And to prove my point about how most Americans are totally tuned out until they engage themselves in the political process right before the elections (when the lamestream media is in full pro-Democratic narrative mode) a USAToday/Gallup poll revealed that 38% of Americans had never heard or had an opinion about Nancy Pelosi before the elections!

More than half said they had never heard of Senator Harry Reid before the elections! So it’s pretty clear that many Americans are massively uninformed and then become susceptible to being ill-informed when the MSM is carrying the water for the Demcrats right before an election … AND THE MEDIA ELITES ARE PERFECTLY AWARE OF THIS DYNAMIC. There has to be a way to defeat these unprofessional people who are subverting the political process with their unvarnished biases and disinformation.

    Hey Moral Majority:

Nice try; but not this time sleazers. House Majority to be up by one more Democrat

    The New York Times
    By Chip Litherland

SARASOTA, Fla., Nov. 9 — A Democrat who narrowly lost the Congressional race here is seeking a recount after dozens of people reported problems using Sarasota County’s touch-screen voting machines and a significant number of ballots had no recorded votes in the high-profile race. But his opponent, Christine Jennings, has not conceded, pointing to voting irregularities.

The Democrat, Christine Jennings, lost to her Republican opponent, Vern Buchanan, by just 373 votes out of a total 237,861 cast — one of the closest House races in the nation. More than 18,000 voters in Sarasota County, or 13 percent of those who went to the polls Tuesday, did not seem to vote in the Congressional race when they cast ballots, a discrepancy that Kathy Dent, the county elections supervisor, said she could not explain.

In comparison, only 2 percent of voters in one neighboring county within the same House district and 5 percent in another skipped the Congressional race, according to The Herald-Tribune of Sarasota. And many of those who did not seem to cast a vote in the House race did vote in more obscure races, like for the hospital board.

Democrats get most of their money from filthy rich fat cat donors:

Those giving $200 to $999: GOP $68 million; Democrats $44 million.

Those giving $1,000 to $9,999: GOP $317 million; Democrats $307 million.

The “fabulously wealthy” donors of $10,000+ gave $111 million to the GOP – Democrats received $29 million more with $140 million take!

Among those who gave $100,000+, the Democrats raised $72 million – more than double the $34 million the GOP took.

Aside from service, conduct, training and recruiting awards, the Army twice awarded Levy the Bronze Star, its fourth highest decoration given for bravery, heroism or meritorious service. He also won the similarly awarded Combat Infantryman’s Badge, given after at least 30 days in a combat zone, and twice received the Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding non-combat service.

Assemblyman Jim Whelan, a former mayor who grew up with Levy on Atlantic City’s beaches initially defended him, calling people who questioned Levy’s record “crackpots” in an Oct. 2 interview.

I see the topic of (more and higher) taxes is quite popular these days among the Democrat party elite.

I read somewhere that some Democrat was whining that the middle class is “getting squeezed” because the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.

Somehow, that premise does not compute for me-my mind’s eye sees that as the middle class slice of the pie chart growing.

Now, having said that, with tax-mania stampeding toward us, I can certainly see the “poor slice” growing while the “middle class slice” shrinks.

BTW~~I don’t think it meant “Sanhedrin” but, rather, “Pharisee” in its juvenile attempt at a put down. Which, of course, makes the comment even more revealing, either way, in its absurd misuse of the word.

    Sorry L@Y: From Wikipedia:
Some claim that the New Testament portrays the Sanhedrin as a corrupt group of Pharisees, although it was predominantly made up of Sadducees at the time. This does agree with the New Testament where the Sanhedrin’s leadership - Annas and Caiaphas were Sadducees. The Gospels also consistently make a distinction between the Pharisees and “the elders,” “the teachers of the law,” and “the rulers of the people”.

DemDonks whining about stolen elections again here and here.

Liberals whining like a bunch of babies when the election doesn’t go their way. They aren’t merely wanting recounts they are alleging voter fraud … again. The evil, diabolic Karl Rove is trying to belatedly steal elections. Pathetic.

I’m sure “Nan” will soon realize her error in judgement and nominate the ONLY logical choice, William Jefferson, unless she can somehow bring Cynthia McKinney out of retirement.

Darth: Although I do NOT think it will happen, it would be really cool if the Republicans could entice Lieberman or another Dem over to their side. Then we could bring up all the thinks the Dims said when Jim Jeffords switched party’s and gave control to Daschle.

Why do I think they would not see it the same way?

If Murtha gets the job, we can always have a little fun with it.

    Anyone remember this: http://viewhigh.blogspot.com/2005/11/are-these-men-related.html

I still cannot watch Murtha without hearing the words, “Hello Joe!”

In responding to his being outed as a liar, Levy claimed he had worn a green beret-a South Vietnamese green beret-on missions in the country. He further stated that he was still suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, and this green beret thing isn’t helping any.

Now, that’s a proud Democrat for you!

List all of his medals and his service to his country if you want but it seems to me he has fallen far from the grace he may have achieved in his youth. Dems may not see it that way, though…

  • 72 Beerme // Nov 14, 2006 at 10:09 pm

Murtha is well known as an influence peddler in congress. He has awarded contracts directly to people who contributed to his campaigns and is most assuredly a corrupt and unethical congresscritter.

Of course he was a war hero so none of that really matters, right? I’m sure he can also trace his lineage back to some other patriot in the past. Hopefully one who didn’t disgrace the family name by later becoming a corrupt sleezebag.

Yep, he’s a perfect choice for the Dems House Leader, especially since Nan has promised the most ethical and transparent government in history.

In reality, she is only rewarding him for coming out against the war as a former war hero, in the Dem attempt to undermine the war effort in the minds of the people. You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.

You’re right Henry, DemDonks don’t have alot to whine about.

But, in case you haven’t noticed we’re not whining anymore. We’ll just fix the problems ourselves, we don’t need your help at all. Let that sink in dude.

Wait till January when the “overdue” Oversight Hearings begin. Then, tell me who’s whining then, dog.

  • 74 Beerme // Nov 14, 2006 at 10:18 pm

Nope. As referenced in comment #45, you’re still whining. But that’s to be expected.

Poll: Most Doubt Democrats Have Plan for Iraq
    Say it ain’t so!

    ABC News:
Convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff is scheduled to report to federal prison tomorrow, over the objections of federal prosecutors who say they still need his help to pursue leads on officials he allegedly bribed.

Sources close to the investigation say Abramoff has provided information on his dealings with and campaign contributions and gifts to … “six to eight seriously corrupt Democratic senators.”

Both Republicans AND Democrats … imagine that. Wouldn’t be surprised if that real estate crook Harry Reid was one of those Democrats.

    Scott, this update from LGF:

So that our readers are clear, the Christian charity Samaritan’s Purse, which runs Operation Christmas Child, is not removing material with Christian themes from their donation boxes. Apparently the British branch of the charity made a unilateral decision (reported here) to remove these items out of fear of offending Muslims—but this is not the policy of the parent group, which is a Franklin Graham organization based here in the US.

  • 79 Laughing@You // Nov 14, 2006 at 10:44 pm

Sources say … Well, you can only hope. If there was something there I trust that Rove would have dug it up, or a least made it up. But, in the meantime you could at least spread another baseless rumor. You go Darth!

My, my. L@Y is getting more rancorous by the minute. The more he posts, the more grousey he gets. I’m just waiting for his ultimate “Well - well - um - you’re a stupid head!”

And for L@Y’s information “in large part” means in large part. Not just some, but largely. The sadducees made up the Sanhedrin “largely”. The rest made up the Sanhedrin “smalley” - as in Stuart. “Yes, I’m good enough and smart enough and gosh darn it, people like me.” But not to be nit picking. :-)

  • 82 Laughing@You // Nov 15, 2006 at 2:33 am

Conserve-a-tips, you nit picking little bustard:

I concede your point; I misspoke when I used the phrase “in large part”. Of course, your source information to dispute my misstatement is, in my view, questionable. But, I meant only to say the Pharisees were “a large part” of the Sanhedrin.

A point which arose because some other ignoramus thought I should have used the word Pharisee, instead of Sanhedrin to begin with. In an effort to satisfy your every “jot and tittle” I will concede that point as well.

Perhaps, I should have responded to being called: “a member of the Immoral Minority” by saying: that with all the sex scandals, financial corruption, the illegal drug use, and the hypocrisy, it is you Republicans who are immoral. In January you will be the minority. Until then you lame ducks, might want to put some distance between yourselves, and the idiot you elected, who got us into this mess.

    Well - well - um - you’re a stupid head!”
