Qaeda Redefines Victory as Phased Redeployment
(2006-11-13) — Sources close to al Qaeda and CNN now say that the terror organization has begun high-level internal discussions designed to redefine “victory” in Iraq as “phased redeployment.”
“Stay the course is not a strategy,” said an unnamed al Qaeda official based in Iran. “Victory is not a strategy. We’re losing the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people, not to mention other assorted body parts.”
The change in tone among al Qaeda leaders comes in the wake of recent secret elections which saw moderates and progressives sweep to power and take leadership of key committees.
“We can’t keep sending thousands of foreign martyrs in to do the job that local Iraqi martyrs should be doing,” said an anonymous source based in Syria. “The cost is too high in money and lives…well, mostly in money, since we have plenty of lives to spare.”
Many top al Qaeda leaders now openly confess that the presence of their foreign terrorists has driven Iraq to the brink of civil war, and that the only way to “win the peace” is to redeploy al Qaeda fighters to a neighboring country.
“We’re been waiting for the Iraqi mosque militias to stand up, so we can stand down,” the source said. “[Muslim cleric] Moktada al-Sadr needs to accelerate recruitment and training for his Mahdi Army. As long as al Qaeda is there planting roadside explosives and car-bombing the marketplaces, there’s no pressure on him to become self-sufficient, to step up and rule the country.”
God Bless America!

Perhaps now we’ll see an end to the constant bickering between those who want to blow themselves up and those who want others blown up. A strong and principled coalition of moderate terrorists could usher in the kind of order that gets EVERYONE blown up.

For those who live and die by polls. The latest Newsweek poll demonstrates how wrong left-wing conventional wisdom (Pedro) has been by misreading the election tea leaves:
While a bare majority of 51 percent called the Democrats’ victory “a good thing,” even more said they were concerned about some of the actions a Democratic Congress might take, including 78 percent who were somewhat or very concerned that it would seek too hasty a withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
Another 69 percent said they were concerned that the new Congress would keep the administration “from doing what is necessary to combat terrorism,” and two-thirds said they were concerned it would spend too much time investigating the administration and Republican scandals.

History has a way of changing things. As we discussed in the last Scrappleface chapter, may of the older Americans [ older than me ] believed in the Democrats of Hoover, Kennedy and Johnson.
Now LBJ was likely the strongest socialist of them, but at least he struggled with the answers to Vietnam instead of just saying get them out at any cost.
I grew up in a Hubert H Humphrey household. Now HHH was staunchly labor but his heart was family and to listen to his speeches now, one would think he was running on the Republican ticket.
Jimmy Carter was my last vote for the Democrats. To explain what he did to the rural economy of the Midwest would take text books of explaining, but his first term was a lesson in economics nobody should ever forget.
We owned a healthy business serving the farm community and if we didn’t opt to work 24/7 for months on end we would have crashed like all the other rural businesses. Nothing like 23 percent interest to kill you.
Back to HHH, his ideas and programs were killed by the new Democrats who fed off the radical anti-war left that destroyed the Democratic convention in Chicago. The political machines killed him and after that he was just a mere name on office buildings and bridges.
Now 35 or so years later we have Democrats singing like a drunken canary about God and family values, but they are just old ’60s socialists who can no longer grow a ponytail.

Laughing@you was hired by the Democrats to do a painting depicting Gen. George Custer at his “last stand” at Little Bighorn. L@Y painted and painted, but would let not one soul see his work in progress.
The Democrats were getting antsy because they wanted to unveil the project and show how “culturally minded” they were and so they continually bugged L@Y to see his work.
Finally, a haughty and elitist L@Y emerged from his studio to announce that his work was finished and could be unveiled at a ceremony. The unveiling was organized and L@Y brought in his masterpiece, shrouded in heavy canvas, to be revealed to all of liberaldom.
As the cover was removed, people gasped at the larger then life painting of Gen. George Custer standing next to a very big cow, halo over its horns, in the middle of a cotton field. In every row of the field, behind the general and the cow, were hundreds of Indians with cotton sacks, pictured gathering the fluffy pods.
“What is this?? screamed the enraged chairman of the DNC, Howard Dean.
“Why, it is a depiction of Custer’s last words,” sniffed L@Y, haughtily. “Holy Cow. Where’d all these cotton-pickin’ Indians come from?”

Do “progressives” stand in the way of ME progress? Have “realists” lost touch with reality? Is the newest Baker plan setting us up for further blowback down the road as we renege on our current committment to Iraq with a phased withdrawal and a brokering of deals with Iran and Syria? Michael Rubin offers a little history and some ideas to think about.
Baker has a bad record of judgment-making in the ME, as far as I am concerned. Why should carrots be on offer to either Syria or Iran? Is Israel to be the sacrificial lamb?
I’m still waiting to hear some “plan” from the Dems. Our involvement in the ME is an American foreign-policy issue, not a partisan one. What is best for our long-term security and foreign relations?

Ms Rightwing, Ink, you sound like you grew up in my family. It is strange, though, I retained those values of the Truman and Kennedy Democrats and find that I am no longer a Democrat! If I wanted to vote that way simply because I was a ‘yellow dog’ who paid absolutely no attention to substance and voted name only, that would be a different story, but I read and listen more then that!
I actually hung onto my Democrat roots through the first half of Clinton’s excuse for a presidency. I did vote for Nixon as the first wave of 18 year olds to get to cast a vote, but that was because even a democrat wouldn’t vote for McGovern. I even tried to give Carter the “he’s a nice guy - he just didn’t understand how to be a president” excuse. I threw in the towel with Clinton, after already being on my way to being swayed by Reagan. Now, I am ready to ride the RINO’s out on a rail. It is time for the Republicans to clean up their mess.
I remember, my freshman year in college, sitting at a Rare Earth concert/sockhop, in the middle of a cloud of smoke from a proliferation of joints, and thinking, “Great. These people are going to be leading our country one day.” Guess what?

Even the military considers that the situation in Iraq cannot be ‘won’ in a military sense.
Makes sense to me to make some deals with non-al quaeda types and even talk with all the neighboring states.
We do need to get out of there but we cannot obviously ‘cut and run’ as they say. We need to ensure that there is a healthy degree of stability able to be maintained by the Iraqi government.
If I was an Iraqi I might even unrealistically long for the days of stability under Saddam, provided I did not mind keeping my mouth shut, etc. Much like some older Russians look back to the stability ( as they saw it ) of the ‘olden days’ under Communism.
We cannot permit the Iraqis to be dependent on us forever.

No question that President Bush does mangle sentences and John Kerry gives overcomplicated answers. Many “Bushisms” have been manufactured in a column at Slate.
Here’s a site, however, that shows a behind the scenes look at how the media and those critical of President Bush have often taken his statements out of context or have provided their own edited versions to create a “Bushism.”
I’ve neither the time or inclination to run every Bushism to the ground, but it’s been my experience that unless an audio file or a videotape exists it wouldn’t be imprudent to assume liberals simply manufacture what appear to be bumbling statements by President Bush, which demonstrates their plain cussedness since there already exists any number of verified mangling of words on the part of the President.
But like anyone who speaks enough in public, there are enough Kerryisms, Kennedyisms, Clintonisms and Bushisms out there to keep even the most jaded person entertained for a long time.

More mendacious lies from CBS. From Powerlineblog:
CBS has posted a deeply dishonest account of David Martin’s interview with outgoing Marine Corps Commandant Michael Hagee that has been picked up by Drudge. According to CBS and Drudge, Hagee states that there was “No Plan for Post-Saddam Iraq.”
Unfortunately, you have to watch the video of the interview that is posted with the story to see that Hagee says nothing of the kind. That’s David Martin doing the testifying, doing his darndest to put words in Hagee’s mouth through repetitive leading questions. Martin doesn’t succeed, but he has nevertheless written the story he set out to get. Disgusting.
I’m beginning to cultivate a visceral hatred … alright, intense disliking for these kind of journalistic jerks who are abusing their public trust. And the average American simply has no idea the headline news is sometimes nothing more than a bald-faced lie.

Speaking of Hoover…gotta tell you a funny. We home schooled our children and I worked very hard to give them a good basis of historical understanding. We studied the constitution, world history, the presidents, ad nauseum and I was proud of the grasp that my brood had of current events.
At Christmas, when all of the extended family comes, we always play games, and this particular Christmas my oldest daughter (now 25) was in her Junior year of high school study. We were playing a trivia game and she got the question, “J. Edgar Hoover headed what organization?” Without so much as a hesitation, my dear daughter gleefully proclaimed, “I know that one!
