Bush Sets Aside Supreme Court Tribunal Ruling

(2006-06-30) — Just a day after the Supreme Court issued a stinging rebuke of the Bush administration’s use of military tribunals for terror suspects, President George Bush announced today that he had signed an executive order setting aside the high court’s decision.

“As I’ve mentioned before, I listen to all voices, but mine is the final decision,” said Mr. Bush. “I’m the decider and I decide what’s best.”

Critics of the Bush administration had rejoiced in the Supreme Court’s 5-3 ruling that the U.S. must apply Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions on the treatment of prisoners of war to members of groups that chop the heads off of their prisoners.

A spokesman for the American Civil Liberties Union called the court’s ruling “a civil rights triumph for those who are oppressed by their justifiable hatred of the United States.”

The president’s order reversing the high court’s Hamdan v. Rumsfeld decision also includes a stipulation that Supreme Court justices must now conduct news conferences after each ruling they hand down.

“I’m just using my executive authority to re-assert the news media’s Constitutional ‘advise and consent’ role,” Mr. Bush said. “From now on every Supreme Court justice will receive the same journalistic oversight now enjoyed by the president and members of Congress. In the Hamdan case the court has protected the president from over-extending his authority, so I’m returning the favor.”
