(2006-03-15) — In a stunning turn of events, French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin (who is a man) today barricaded himself inside a building at the Sorbonne to protest student riots over unemployment that threaten his own job security.
Over the weekend, the French government evicted 200 students who had staged a sit-in at the University. The students continue to protest a new ‘First Employment Contract’ proposal that would make it easier for French companies to fire young employees.
Mr. de Villepin has promoted the new contract as a way to increase employment among young people by reducing the risk to a business that it would get stuck with a bad employee for life.
However, with his own job threatened by nationwide student riots, the prime minister said he won’t come out of from his Sorbonne bunker until the French Parliament passes a law guaranteeing job security for elected officials.
In other unrelated news from France, business author Ken Blanchard reported a recent spike in French college bookstore sales of his best-selling book ‘Who Moved My Cheese?’
