(2006-02-02) — To demonstrate their level of commitment to substantive lobbying reform, House Republicans today will pick former Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers as their new majority leader, according to unnamed legislative aides.
Miss Miers, the White House lawyer whose high court nomination was withdrawn under pressure from conservatives because she lacked credentials for the job, has never served in Congress.
Since she cannot legally assume the new post, Interim Majority Leader Roy Blunt, R-MO, will step in to become Acting Majority Leader in her place.
The GOP conference bypassed Arizona Rep. John Shadegg, and Ohio Rep. John Boehner in order to “send a symbolic message about our symbolic devotion to symbolically eliminate influence-peddling on Capitol Hill,” according to the anonymous source.
The appointment of Miss Miers, along with Republicans’ rejection today of a package of reform proposals, is part of the new ‘Virtual Integrity’ initiative that GOP strategists hope will lead to an electoral sweep in November.
