Murtha Rejects Military Service, Heads for Canada

(2006-01-03) — Pennsylvania Rep. John ‘Jack’ Murtha, a Vietnam veteran, told ABC News this week that because of the Bush administration’s Iraq policy, he would not serve in the U.S. military today, and he discouraged others from enlisting.

The 73-year-old Democrat lawmaker could not be reached for comment, as colleagues speculated that he already may have entered Canada to ride out the remainder of the U.S. military occupation of Iraq.

A Pentagon spokesman said the government would not pursue Rep. Murtha on draft-dodging charges, since there is no military draft.

“We respect Jack Murtha’s experience as a former Marine,” the unnamed Pentagon source said. “But we couldn’t even permit him to enlist in our all-volunteer force because he exceeds our age limit by almost four decades.”
