Abramoff Plea Deal Nets Scotland Trip for Prosecutors

(2006-01-03) — Jack Abramoff, the lobbyist who allegedly used $1.7 million in Indian casino money in an apparently-futile attempt to buy influence with 220 members of Congress, today struck a deal with federal prosecutors for a reduced jail term in exchange for his testimony and a golf outing in Scotland for the team of prosecutors.

“The Scotland trip is the community service element of Mr. Abramoff’s punishment,” said an unnamed spokesman for the Justice Department. “It’s a fact-finding mission so that we can study the foundations of Scottish law. The Institute for Prosecutor Instruction (TIPI), a grassroots organization to promote legal integrity, was founded by Mr. Abramoff late last week.
