(2005-12-13) — A group of California laboratory mice, which now have working human brain cells in their skulls thanks to injections with embryonic stem cells, today announced they would begin a study of their own, injecting mouse stem cells into human brains.
A spokesman for the team of mice said that although some “anti-intellectual rodents” have reservations about using embryonic mouse stem cells, and even about performing experiments on humans, the potential for curing debilitating mouse diseases outweighs any ethical concerns.
“Our research could make it possible for mice who have been paralyzed during tragic run-ins with mouse traps, to actually walk on all-fours again,” said one team member. “And lab rats intentionally infected with horrible diseases or forced to consume vast quantities of artificial sweeteners, now have hope for living full, normal lives. The potential for miraculous cures is limited only by the imagination, and of course our ability to secure funding.”
However, in an unusual joint news conference, the executive director of Mice for the Ethical Treatment of Humans joined the director of Rodents for Life, to decry the mouse team’s “barbaric, unethical attempt to play Human Scientist.”
