Bush May Run for Clinton Senate Seat in 2006

by Scott Ott · No Comments

(2005-06-07) — President George Bush today said he has not ruled out moving to New York to run for the Senate against incumbent Democrat Sen. Hillary Clinton in 2006.

The president’s remarks were sparked by a speech Sen. Clinton gave yesterday at a “Women for Hillary” fundraiser in New York City to kick off her 2006 Senate reelection campaign.

“Senator Clinton sounds like she’s running against me,” said Mr. Bush, “So maybe I ought to return the favor. I love New York and I’ve always been a big Yankees fan.”

During yesterday’s political rally, the former first lady presented her “progressive vision for America,” which consists of three action-oriented elements:

  • Bold complaints about Republican dominance in the House, Senate and White House

  • Vigorous attacks against the character, motives and religious faith of conservatives
  • Courageous appeals to journalists to investigate the Bush administration’s alleged wrongdoing

“This is the vision that will build our Democrat bridge to the 22nd century,” Mrs. Clinton told almost 1,000 women who raised $250,000 for the candidate. “We truly believe in calling Republicans liars and religious zealots bent on destroying our nation. That’s our Democrat vision. That’s our agenda. And if you vote to return me to the Senate for another six-year term, I promise to fight for that agenda for the better part of two years.”

Although his second White House term is not scheduled to end until January 2009, Mr. Bush said he could continue to serve as president while running for the Senate, “in a fashion reminiscent of Sen. John Kerry, who served as Senator-in-absentia during his 2004 presidential campaign.”
