(2002-10-15) — Rep. Dick Gephardt, D-MO., appeared at a press conference today with a ventriloquist dummy whom he called “Little Buddy”. The dummy, which Rep. Gephardt held, seemed to disagree with the Congressman on several points.
“I’m not saying we should repeal the Bush tax cut,” said Rep. Gephardt, but the puppet interrupted him.
“It’s gonna bankrupt the government,” said Mr. Buddy. “We need to put that money back into the hands of Federal workers who know best how to spend it.”
Rep. Gephardt looked startled at Mr. Buddy’s outburst and seemed to be mumbling inaudibly to himself as the dummy spoke.
“Of course, I’m not running for president, so I can tell the truth,” Mr. Buddy added.
Despite the embarrassment of the moment, Rep. Gephardt said Little Buddy would accompany him on future speaking engagements “at least until the polling numbers come in.”
