(2002-10-15) — Former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter expressed concern today that if Jeb Bush loses the gubernatorial election in Florida, the embarrassment could become a distraction to President Bush.
“Having a brother who’s a public failure, theoretically, could take the President’s focus from the economy and foreign policy,” said Mr. Clinton. “Mr. Bush certainly won’t be at the top of his game. Not that I would know, having never experienced that.”
“It’s humiliating, one would surmise,” said Mr. Carter, “to have such a close relative be branded as a loser. It reflects on the President himself. Of course, that’s all speculation. I can’t personally understand the situation.”
Roger Clinton could not be reached for comment, and Billy Carter died in 1988.
