(2002-10-11) — Now that Israel and the Palestinians are friendly neighbors, and the people of North Korea enjoy America-like freedoms, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has been awarded the Nobel Peace prize.
The five-member committee praised decades of “untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts.”
“Mr. Carter’s efforts in the mid-east have resulted in the peace enjoyed today by Israelis and Palestinians alike,” the committee said in its citation. “And the people of North Korea have only Mr. Carter to thank for the lavish lifestyle they now enjoy, in peaceful harmony with South Korea.”
A spokesman for the former President said he plans to use the $1 million (US) prize money to buy a lovely summer home in the Gaza strip.
