(2002-10-08) — Astronomers at the Palomar Observatory near San Diego announced the discovery of a space object 4 billion miles from the middle of the solar system. Dubbed Gray Davis ‘02, the object is so far from the center, astronomers first theorized that it was from another solar system.
“It’s way out there,” one observer noted.
Since Gray Davis ‘02 wobbles in an irregular orbit a billion miles past Pluto, those who discovered it first thought of naming it Goofy. The object is rich in minerals, but colder than ice, since it lacks a reliable source of energy.
Astronomers are debating about the importance of the discovery. Many note that Gray Davis ‘02 is not a planet in its own right, just a waste product from the early days of the system.
According to a researcher at Palomar, “If it weren’t for the gravitational fields of some of the larger planets, this tiny little lump would have been cast from the solar system years ago. By all rights, no one should have ever heard of Gray Davis ‘02.”
