Court Rules Teen Killers Must Slay Adults by Scott Ott (2005-03-01) -- On the same day it decided to shield teen murderers from the death penalty, the U.S. Supreme Court today ruled that teen killers must slay adult victims. "The age of 18 is the point where society draws the line for many purposes between childhood and adulthood." Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote for the 5-4 majority. "It is, we conclude, the age at which the line for murder-victim eligibility ought to rest." The ruling affects the operations of hundreds of youth gangs and untold numbers of depressed teenage loners, many of whom immediately spoke out against it. "The court is over-reaching," said one unnamed member of a Los Angeles street gang. "Are we now supposed to ask for ID when we're doing a drive-by? This judicial activism is going to create all kinds of delays and backlogs in our business." Donate | More Satire | Printer-Friendly | |
