Bush Backs Annan: 'He's Technically Not a Criminal'
by Scott Ott

(2004-12-09) -- President Bush today expressed his support for Kofi Annan, saying that the beleaguered United Nations leader is "technically not a criminal as far as we know, or can prove, at this time."

The enthusiastic endorsement by Mr. Bush comes at a time when Sen. Norm Coleman, R-MN, and others have called for Mr. Annan's resignation in the wake of the multi-billion dollar oil-for-food scandal and other allegations of corruption at the highest levels of the global body.

"I think he should do his time...you know, in office," said Mr. Bush. "After all, it would be hard to find another man who could do what Kofi's done and have the impact he's had in an organization as relevant as the U.N. is."
