(2003-06-25) — CNN announced today that it knows “a lot more stuff” than it can share on its daily newscasts. Today’s story about Iraqi nuclear components hidden beneath a rose bush is just the tip of the iceberg, according to a highly-placed news editor.
CNN, which had an exclusive on the nuke story, agreed to embargo its release for a week at the request of its anonymous CIA source.
“We’ve found that anonymous government sources will tell us almost anything if we don’t run a story about it for a while,” said the CNN editor. “So, we’re stockpiling really big news from unnamed sources. I wish I could tell you about this one thing, that this one guy said about this event that’s probably going to happen. I’m about to bust if I don’t tell someone.”
CNN said it agrees to delay stories in order to get exclusives from sources it agrees to keep anonymous in order to get the story at all.
