(2003-04-03) — Coalition troops arrived at the edge of Baghdad today only to find that the entire city is gone. In what retired military experts call “the most ingenius move in modern warfare”, the regime of Saddam Hussein has replaced the city of Baghdad with a replica, which highway signs identify as Aucuneville.
Lieutenant General William Wallace, commander of American ground forces, said, “The city we found is different from the one we war-gamed in.”
Pentagon planners refused to speculate about whether Baghdad was completely destroyed by bombing or has simply gone underground.
