(2003-03-27) — Hans Blix said today that even if coalition forces or Iraqi civilians begin to experience skin blistering, vomiting, loss of nervous control and death, it won’t mean that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction.
“I don’t think that would be conclusive evidence that they have the weapons,” said Mr. Blix, the United Nations’ chief weapons inspector. “There are other things that cause these symptoms. Blisters are often caused by friction, like when your shoe rubs your heel. Vomiting could just be the flu. Loss of physical control is often epilepsy, and death can be caused by all sorts of things.”
Yesterday, Mr. Blix said chemical protection suits and antidotes found in Iraqi bunkers don’t mean that Saddam Hussein’s troops were expecting use of chemical agents.
