(2003-02-12) — Linguists working to decipher the latest tape purporting to be from Usama bin Laden say the terrorist will not order an attack on Washington D.C.. But it’s not for fear of the military weaponry recently brought in to safeguard the city.
In the previously-obscure section of audio, Mr. bin Laden is heard to say: “O you who believe, fear Allah, but fear downtown D.C. even more. The infidels there are bold, armed and whacked out on crack. The crusaders in those neighborhoods will not be intimidated. They are likely to remove your tires while you’re stopped at a light. This would jeopardize our jihad. New York is the same. That’s why we attacked it from the air last time. We cannot contend with New Yorkers.”
Mr. bin Laden also expresses concern on the recording that his would-be martyrs could get caught in traffic.
