(2003-02-08) — Despite the protestations of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, black coaches across the country say Steve Mariucci can have the Detroit Lions, a team which lost 13 games last year.
The Rev. Jackson demanded that the National Football League investigate the process the Lions used to select the recently-fired Mr. Mariucci from among the droves of coaches clamoring to move to sunny Detroit.
“I understand Jesse’s trying to ride this story for a little P.R. power,” said an unnamed black coach. “But frankly, I’m holding out for a team that had more than three wins last year. God bless you, Steve. They’re all yours. I’m waiting for a call from a real football team.”
