The day we were simply AMERICANS! No one has ever done a breakdown of how many of the 3000 were Liberals or Conservatives, nor should they have!
I pray that someday we can all put our differences aside and be Americans but, that is probably pie in the sky. At least for today, (in rememberance of those that fell or were afflicted on September 11, 2001), I vow to offer my "Olive Branch" and be "just an American"!

May such a tragedy never happen again!

    I'm with you!

We (Americans) truly are much more alike than different. The differences get magnified way out of proportion too often and for some reason we can't just discuss something, we feel compelled to fight about it…right from the start. Very odd

  • 7 Upnorthlurkin // Sep 11, 2009 at 2:54 pm

My thanks to Bill, Scott and Steve for making it okay to remember and be enraged and horrified by this terrorist act of inhumanity against all Americans.

    God Bless America!

Honoring September 11th: They Want Us to Forget by Mark Tapson.

It seems impossible to believe that that morning could be forgotten – just as it was once impossible to believe that our government could erase “jihad” and “Islamic” and “terrorism” from our national lexicon, preventing us from even naming the enemy, or that an American President could proclaim us no longer a Christian nation, but rather one of the world’s largest Muslim countries.

For the record: I am not trying to "stir it up". I think "it" has already been stirred up. I fully expect to be criticized for posting this "inflammatory" blog post, and for "politicizing" this day. Such is not my intent; I do think, however, that the issues raised here are important and need to be discussed. Scott, I sincerely hope you will agree with that view.

Today should be a day of solidarity among all Americans, I cannot help but agree.

In the sense that "solidarity" is not of the kumbayah or ubuntu or group-hug genres but is, instead, of the "united in a common cause" species.

boberin : "missed the point"? No, I don't think so … in fact, I might argue, instead, that a whole bunch of other people are "missing the point" … but that isn't the point, either.

FWIW, I've been unhappy - for years - with the way we memorialize September 11, focusing almost exclusively on the tragic aspects of the day (reading the names of the victims, and so on) ; unhappy with air-brushing out the images of people leaping to their deaths from the roofs of the Trade Towers from the TV coverage of the event ; and there are a number of other aspects I could mention if I wanted to go on and on. But I kept my mouth shut, and I told myself that "everyone commemorates things in his or her own way".

Now, I grant you, I would not be made any happier by making 9/11 into another move-it-to-next-Monday-shop-til-you-drop-watch-football-pig-out-on-chips-n-dips holiday, either, but - "National Day of Service and Remembrance"? Should we go plant a tree while we're at it?

IMHO, I can't say that keeping my mouth shut is an approach that has "worked out for me" …

Upnorth : "Kill an America hater"? Where would be the sport in that? I believe the applicable phrase would be, "Like shooting fish in a barrel".

BTW, while we're on the topic, did you read Van Jones and the 'Truthers' by Charles Krauthammer yet?

I hope that you're referring to foreigners of some sort because, black, white, yellow or brown (apologies to any color left out) EVERYONE that I know that lives here (America) loves it just fine.
Admittedly some do not hold that America is "better" or "more deserving" of dignity/respect than other civilized nations but that does NOTHING to lessen our love of the land.
I'm thankful daily that I, in effect, "won the lottery" by being born here. That does not lessen my knowledge that had it gone aonther way, I'd live somewhere else and probably love that too (in most cases) and, if that were true I'd hope that America would treat my land with dignity and respect.

I'm sad to say I think I just participated in Obey-me's national day of service by doing what I've done the past seven years. Having two friends who are fire fighters, I baked two pans of brownies and just delivered them. I thanked them and refused their thanks…just accepted their hugs. They know I love and respect them.

Eight years later…and I still have no words to express how a little of me died that day. Yet the American spirit rose from the ashes of that despicable act of inhumanity and hate. May we re-find the bond and courage and fineness that we shared on 9/11.

Thanks to all who have posted the exceptional links.

I, for one, will never forget.

  • 34 onlineanalyst // Sep 11, 2009 at 11:22 pm

I am rather taken with what Jonah Goldberg posted at NRO's "The Corner" today:

For the record, I never much liked the idea of a monument at "ground zero." I wanted the World Trade Center rebuilt, even bigger. As I wrote at the time: "When the World Trade Center was first constructed it was the tallest building in the world. When it was destroyed, it was the fifth. America isn't fifth at anything worth being first at. It's time we had the tallest building in the world again."

And, "America will find an appropriate way to mourn. But if we must have a shrine or monument for our remorse, let's put it on the 200th floor, right next to the antiaircraft guns."

I always liked the reader suggestion to name the new towers "Freedom" and "Unity" and let al-Qaeda figure out what the initials stand for.

Boberin, how you can fail to see the distinction between Their actions vs ours totally is beyond my comprehension. You seem to equate our failed system with theirs. I actually feel silly reminding you that there are degrees of failure or accomplishment, God Bless America is not a demand but a plea. God have mercy upon America is a plea as well, but you seem to utilize it as a condemnation saying that as a whole we have never done a thing more worthy of blessings than the mideast countries who support the terrorism that murdered those 3.000 people 8 years ago. There is a difference and if you cannot notice it then please stop with the moral equivelancies.____

Sgt: This may not be a good explanation for how different people see 9/11 but, the other day when the media showed new pictures taken by the Hubble telescope, it occured to me that when I see these pictures I marvel at the magnificent things my GOD has created, while atheists, (and even SOME Christians "marvel" at the fact that "man" can build a telescope to take these pictures.

I was a little disappointed on the last thread when I said the Earth was only about 6000 years old, to which I was challenged about that "theory", and even another poster was asked if he believed that "6000 year old theory" for which he did not answer either yes or no.

Evolutionists would have us believe that a "big bank, followed by water dripping on a rock making a "soup" created everything.

That takes MUCH more "faith" to believe that "fairy tale" than to believe in a CREATOR!

In fact, the poster called "6000 year old Earth" a "theory", when it is Darwin's tripe that is actually the REAL "theory"!

  • 45 JamesonLewis3rd // Sep 12, 2009 at 2:56 pm

The scientific theory of the age of the universe (13.5 billion years or something) and the Biblical account of Creation are not mutually exclusive.

Although He gave it to us, Almighty God is not constrained by time.

  • 47 RAM1 // Sep 12, 2009 at 3:42 pm

GOD is not, man IS! Our system of time on this Earth is in years and we have had about 6000 of them. In six days GOD created the Heavens, Earth, and Man, and then rested on the seventh day. So how did those "billions of years" get between when HE created Earth and Man?

As for the "scientific theory" about the age of the Earth, the figures, (years/billions/millions), keep changing, like Obama's costs of his programs.

    JL3,
Believe the Bible or do not. Geneologically speaking according to the Bible the time man has been here to record time is betwween 6k-to 8k years. I was not there myself and cannot say for sure, but I will trust in the Word! Trying to reconcile the arbitrary time frames that man places upon the world with what GOD actually says is perhaps a fruitless effort. I am incapable of fathoming the infinity of GOD and time, or his measurment of it. I have found the following website helpful in attempting to understand: http://www.icr.org/ncsf/

    RAM,
I am not aware of the "Big Bank" theory- I assume that it means if you deposite enough pennies for billions and billions of years then compound interest will make you a trillionare. Sorry- I know it was just a typoh. I recall a debate wherin an evolutionist made fun of a creationist about his hypothesis which stated that all of the thousands of dog species in the world came from a very few breeds carried on the Ark and developed within the past 4000 years. The creationist came back with "It is just micro-evolution, not so hard to believe compared to you telling these folks that all of them came from a rock!

Have you ecver heard Kent Hovind? He was a science teacher for 12 years until he had enough of the secular school system and started challenging evolutionists one on one, (and sometimes one on hundreds!), and making them look like the fools they are! He did such a good job that they trumped up and twisted a tax evasion charge and sentenced him to 10 years in prison to shut him up. His story seems a bit like "Paul's" doesn't it?

I'm a hard-core Bible believer and I do not deny the length of [Earth] time since the Creation of man; I thought the topic was the theoretical, scientific age of the Universe versus God's Word.

I really don't mean to belabor the point which, to me, is nothing more than a distraction from the actual wonders of Creation and this may not even be the proper venue for such a discussion but…..

That first day, why does it have to have been 24 hours? How long was "the Spirit of God…hovering over the waters" before "God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness?"

Please, do not get the impression that, for me, this is any more than a fleeting glimpse into the Glorious Attributes of Almighty God which I would never claim or even hope to fathom. For me, this is nothing more than one of those questions that will be answered in the sweet by-and-by; what is important is that I was washed in the Blood of Jesus about 24 years ago. I only have spent any time on this topic in order to be prepared to counter a non-believer's claims (and the topic often comes up in conversation) that science somehow trumps God's Word or vice versa.

The veracity of each and every precious word of the Bible is, in my mind, heart and soul, indisputable. I do not need the science to prove it but whenever the occasion arises, I will always assert and explain as best I can that science actually proves God's Word. For example, the Hubble telescope-along with the attendant chatter about the "mysterious" Big Bang-makes a good segue; directly to Genesis 1:1.

    OK, that's a tough one.
I'll hazard a wild guess and say "not".
"But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong." — Dennis Miller

  • 82 ChileSerrano // Sep 13, 2009 at 4:28 pm

    Here we go … again!

"I tended to agree with some Obama advisers that Democratic presidents typically have provoked a frothing response from paranoids — from Father Coughlin against F.D.R. to Joe McCarthy against Truman to the John Birchers against J.F.K. and the vast right-wing conspiracy against Bill Clinton.

But Wilson’s shocking disrespect for the office of the president — no Democrat ever shouted “liar” at W. when he was hawking a fake case for war in Iraq — convinced me: Some people just can’t believe a black man is president and will never accept it."

Boy, Oh Boy by Maureen Garofalo Dowd.

    " … a frothing response from paranoids … "?

Do you ever read your own columns, Mo?

  • 83 ChileSerrano // Sep 13, 2009 at 4:53 pm

    Ah, yes, Dennis Miller!

Here's one of my favorite Miller quotes. Somehow, it seems appropriate here …

“Washington, D.C. is to lying what Wisconsin is to cheese.”

  • 84 gafisher // Sep 13, 2009 at 4:54 pm

During the Rally The President's helicopter flew over the Mall bearing him to the airport for his flight to Minnesota (obviously when it comes down to "flight or fight" Obama votes "Absent"). It's unknown whether the big O made one of his trademarked 1-finger salutes to the crowd, but it's pretty unlikely he was able to avoid noticing the millions of patriots assembled in front of The Peoples' House.

CNN is reporting that the "Tea party movement has anger, no dominant leaders." No dominant leaders — no community organizers — just lots and lots and lots of grass roots.

  • 85 gafisher // Sep 13, 2009 at 4:57 pm

Wilson's paying a heavy price for his outburst. With 48 hours over a million dollars had been contributed to his campaign fund. One can only wonder how many billions he'd have received if he'd stayed quiet …

  • 86 gafisher // Sep 14, 2009 at 1:05 am

I like Dennis Miller, but that comparison (D.C.:lying = Wisconsin:cheese) could get him sued for defamation of cheese.

Good old Maureen Dowd. First, she makes a reputation by buttressing her opinions with ellipsis, cutting people's actual remarks so that they are not recognizable from the context of the orignal. Her Dowd-ification to fit her preconceived narrative is legendary.

Now, she uses the opposite tactic, putting words into people's minds.

What she did in her piece trashing Rep. Joe Wilson is quasi libelous.

Are journalistic ethics dead in that poser? Did Maureen Dowd ever have them?

Perhaps Moron, er-I mean Maureen is related to Elwood P. Dowd, who ALSO saw things that were not there? Not a fair comparison since Elwood was a fictional character.

If you have not heard, another activist Judge has ordered a 10 year old home schooled girl to attend public school because of the "rigidity" of her mother's religious views and said the 10-year-old needed to consider other worldviews as she matures.

Great, now she will be subjected to the "rigidity" of the views of public school that teach NOTHING about GOD at all!!!

Seems fair, —well to MOST secular libs!

    Good news for the Media!

According to a poll released Sunday by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, 26 percent of the respondents said the press is careful to avoid bias.

    Twenty-six percent !

After everything the media has done - for years & years & years - 26% still trust them !

Amazing how stubborn some folks can be -

  • 97 boberinyetagain // Sep 14, 2009 at 4:36 pm

Mo, even funnier is that 26% are still republicans

AP Poll: A year later, worries linger on economy

Personally, I'd say that headline is something of an understatement.

… seven out of 10 Americans lack confidence the federal government has taken safeguards to prevent another financial industry meltdown …
Even more — 80 percent — rate the condition of the economy as poor …
… a majority worry about their own ability to make ends meet.

Half of those surveyed said deficit reduction should be a national priority over increased spending on health care, education or alternative energy.

  • 99 ChileSerrano // Sep 14, 2009 at 5:20 pm

In a glimmer of good news for the administration, 17 percent of those surveyed said the government's massive economic stimulus has improved the economy, a 10 percentage point increase over July. Nearly six out of 10, however, said they are not confident that $787 billion that Congress approved to lower taxes and inject spending into the economy will do any good.

    Well, I <>guess that's good news … if you insist …

Of course, how the questions are asked is crucial. Here's a recent Gallup poll, for instance, on the most important problems facing the country.

    Top two issues :

    Economy (in general) 29 %
    Healthcare 26 %

    Pretty close, right? However :

    Unemployment 15 %
    Federal budget deficit 9 %

Read into the story a bit further, and you'll find that a total of 57 % cited one of the "economic issues" as "most important". (I got a number in excess of 60 %; guess maybe due to rounding, or maybe it depends on what you consider to be an "economic issue"!)

Wonder what the result would be if you polled people on whether a) the economy, b) healthcare, or c) something else is the most important issue? Just asking …

I keep remembering the best poll question ever posed:
"Would you rather walk to work, or carry your lunch?"

  • 103 RAM1 // Sep 14, 2009 at 9:02 pm

My reply to OLA has been "scrubbed", so I will try to recreate it from memory.

I said something like, Maybe Maureen is related to Elwood P. Dowd ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042546/ ), who was famous for also seeing things that are not there.

The main difference is he was fictional and likeable, while MA-reen is just a typical Obama-bot!

Jameson, if you're interested you might want to take a listen to (or a look at) a well-reasoned Christian discussion of the issue (links above).
