(2003-01-18) — Senator Barbara Boxer, D-CA, has amended her bill requiring airlines to equip planes with missile-evading technology, adding a provision to ensure the safety of all motorists.
The amendment calls for equipping all personal automobiles with terrorist-proof technology similar to those used by Speed Racer, the famous actor and race-car driver.
“Every driver on the American roads is at risk,” said Sen. Boxer. “The only way we can have total safety is for the federal government to mandate that individuals spend more money protecting themselves whether they want to or not.”
Under the regulations of the bill, all 2004 new cars would roll off the assembly line equipped with the following:
- Auto jacks, allowing the car to leap short distances at high speeds. The jacks could also be used to crush a terrorist’s car by jumping on top of it.
- Powerful rotary saws protruding from the front of the car for self-defense.
- A deflector shield which seals the ‘cockpit’ making it bullet proof, crash proof, gas proof and water tight.
- Auxiliary oxygen tank.
- A homing robot that can carry pictures and hand-written or tape-recorded messages to rescue crews. The bird-like device is operated by a built-in remote control within the cockpit.
The estimated cost for a 2004 mid-size car will be $1.5 million.
