(2002-12-15) — Al Gore conceded tonight that George Bush has won the 2004 election for the presidency. Mr. Gore said he decided to concede early to avoid the drawn-out political process of an entire campaign.
“It’s been a hard fought battle so far,” Mr. Gore told Lesley Stahl of the CBS program 60 Minutes. “But a real man acknowledges when he’s whipped. I want to wish my opponent the best for the next five years or so.”
Mr. Gore said he would return to private life and the five part-time positions he currently holds. But he did acknowledge that his political aspirations haven’t died.
In the 60 minutes interview he said, “I’d like to send a shout out to Sen. Hillary Clinton. Listen Mrs. C, I was a good VP for your husband, and I could be the same for you in 2008. You don’t have to answer now. Just think it over.”
