(2002-12-12) — U.S. Senator Trent Lott, R-Miss., has formally requested a “do over” of his Strom Thurmond birthday party comments.
“It’s just like challenging the call in football,” said Sen. Lott. “There’s some question about what I really meant…heck, I don’t know what I really meant. So, let’s just have another party, and I’ll come with some prepared remarks. We’ll just re-play the down…so to speak.”
The Mississippi Senator said he felt sure that there is a “do over” provision somewhere in the reams of Senate rules.
“And if there isn’t,” he added, “we’ll pass something that says no Senator can be knocked off at the peak of his career for something he says at a 100-year-old colleague’s birthday party. You see what I’m saying?”
Sen. Lott said if he’s forced to step down as Senate Majority Leader, “I swear I’ll start wearing a wire, and record everything my colleagues say from the men’s room to the cocktail parties.”
